defensive and look for the op to end it as quickly as you can offensively. they will make a mistake and you need to make them pay for it dearly.

You know, you are not in a street fight right now. You are sitting in front of a computer. So what makes you think you need to fight?
If you do, if you are confronted, defensive is the only appropriate position. I will go further: in the army, defensive is the only appropriate position. I realize there is the old saw about "Sometimes the best defense is a good offense," but the relevant word there is SOMETIMES. You have to assume that means not this time.
Yes, if you are in a situation where you are confronted by pure evil, or if you are defending against a threat to the defenseless under circumstances that convince you the attack will come within seconds, you can possibly justify taking the initiative. But in that case, the threat -- the real, imminent threat -- is the aggression.
So back to that street fight you seem to think is inevitable. Is it, really? Or is it just protecting your ego, or your "turf" in some sense that is not in itself justifiable. For example, gang wars generally tend to settle over turf (which are in fact public streets to which neither gang has exclusive property rights) or vengeance. Can you leave vengeance to the rule of law? If so, cooperate with the legal authority that wishes to prevent the fight, and there will be no fight.
I'm no expert on gangs, but I know that being morally justified does matter in the end. Remember in all those westerns, where so much emphasis was put on who drew first? That's because the difference between murder and self-defense really is that important. Ask any judge. Go ahead; he's the one who will decide if you go to prison or not. Ask him.

Defense is offense and offense is defense.
You must do both.
Let us place value on some things here. there are fights (ego) and then there are self-defense situations ( fear for life).
A fight is between two people who choose to physically compete to satisfy their ego's. Either one has a choice to walk away.
In a self-defense situation the option to not participate is not presented and someone or something is not giving you a choice.
I will not address a "fight" as they are stupid and meaningless.
But a self-defense situation is a matter of utmost importance.
You must use both offense and defense to escape unharmed.
Objective 1) Don't get hurt.
Objective 2) Do whatever it takes to escape without getting hurt.
Use whatever means is at your disposal to achieve these objectives.
Most likely an aggressor will attack first so defense most likely happens first. Even if that defense is an offensive move it is still defense as the attacker made the first move.

You should always be the defensive. Watch the person for body movements that tell you that he's going to hit you like clentching and un clentching fist, puttting his left side forward, pulling back his right sholder. At this point you want to have your hands up in a defensive position with your hands open. It doesn't look intimadating but will help you block.
If attacked by more than one person then watch his friends. Don't let them surround you. Move around to keep everyone in fornt of you at all times. Take out the leader or biggest guy first, do it hard and fast (throat punch, kick to the groin, elbow to the back of the head). This will scare the others and give you a few seconds to re evaluate. Alot of times some of the guys will run away at this point. If not then take the next biggest guy and do the same.

I wonder how many people who answer this question have been in a real fight against a stranger who want to hurt them. Keep in mind when man start to fight, they usually are trying to hurt you badly or kill you, not show who is boss or stronger or anything!
My answer is offensive. I got in two street fight. Last time against a man with small knife. I was try to do it defensive and he end up bit me. If I would have done it the aggressive way and knock him out quikcly, we both would have walk away pretty much unharmed.

Offense is the best defense. I never been one to start an altercation but once I know its unavoidable you have to go forward. The phrase "you pause you fall" is one I always practiced. If you get hit first you might get knocked out. I go for total destruction to end it quickly. It builds street cred and your reputation and you will have fewer problems in the future. People know you are not the one to be toyed with. You build the respect and avoid future problems.

Offensive, do what you got to do, you put him down, hard and fast, make sure he never wants to tangle with you again, and that goes the same with the folks he runs with as well. There ain`t no rules in a street fight, except, no knives, broken bottles, guns etc... unless he tries to use something like that, then all bets are off!!!!!

both. find a good position that you can defend yourself in and attack from it. fire escapes and very narrow alleys work well, as only one opponent at a time can face you. multiple opponents expect you to cower or run, so if you attack it can throw them off for a fraction of a second. use that fraction to kill or maim one. I assume youre carrying a knife, pipe, or broken bottle. if you kill or almost kill one of your assailants, the others will think twice about bothering you. that is your opportunity to kill a second one and select a third target.
never forget that the best defense is a good attack and the best attack is a good defense. dont stick with either style, but flow from a defense like a parry or block into an attack while your opponent is still reaching out with his attack.

as i matured and really understood the art of war, i have come to realize you need a good supply of both.... the offensive approach intimidates the opponent and sends the msg of no fear, the defensive approach puzzles the opponent and defuses his hostility just enough for you to gain an edge.....if you gain it, pounce like a tiger! you'd b surprised to know that most street fights only last 3 min or so.

Defense first...stay on your p's and q's for two reasons. 1. Self-defense laws lol. 2. If you are smart and your opponent is for lack of better words...DUMB... he will come out swinging wildly and missing which wastes more energy than guarding up. Wait for them to start breathing hard and tee off. They can't defend themselves quickly enough if you just barrage them ferociously. They drop...u win!!!
