Yeah its a crappy situation, and its a good example of why it can be a bad idea to try to have a relationship with people like that (be it from work/school/whatever), but I think if you just go into it with the attitude, "nothing against him, we just weren't compatible, it was a good learning experience, and it's funny now looking back on it" then things should be ok at least on your end. Now I don't know what you're...reasons... are, but as long as its not something really terrible then you should be able to go in with that mind set.
You'll definately have to sit him down and have a talk with him about the situation and try to get things cleared up and out in the open beforehand. Otherwise it will be very awkward and uncomfortable.

Matter of fact, I am in the same situation. We are still good friends, would probably do anything for each other, still care for each other. I thought it would be extremely awkward, but I don't have the intense feelings I once had for him, though I do still care for him. We've both moved on--that's the key; if one of you is stuck in the past, it can't be comfortable. I think we still have respect for each other, maybe more so than when we lived together (we weren't married). At least we are not shouting at each other.

it will be natural seeing him for a while because you still have feeling for that person, you just couldn't get along because of your differences. after a while, your feelings will not be as sensitive and vulnerable and it will become easier for you all to be around each other. the length of time depends on how you all broke up, the reason you all broke up and how deeply your feelings were hurt

if you can be his friend then do it. dont ever let him think that you are available to him though. But be a nice person cos it'll make him a nice person too.
