How do you bake a cake using a can of diet coke?

I have heard that using a cake mix, one can substitued ingredients for a can of diet coke.

Diet Coke Cake Recipe
1 can Diet Coke (or Any Diet Soda)
1 Box Cake Mix (any Flavor But Chocolate)
***Optional, But Recommended***
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
Blend everything together until well blended. Batter will look a little watery. Pour into prepared 9X9 pan. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean.

Frosting
1/2 cup butter or margarine (1 stick), cut up
1/3 cup Coca-Cola
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 package (16 ounces) confectioners' sugar
In 1-quart saucepan, heat butter, cola, and cocoa to boiling over medium-high heat. Remove saucepan from heat. Add vanilla and stir until butter melts. Place confectioners' sugar in medium bowl. Pour hot butter mixture over sugar. With wire whisk, stir until well combined. Set aside until ready to use. Stir frosting well; spread over top of hot cake immediately after removing from oven. Cool in pan on wire rack.

I haven't tried this myself, so I can't tell if it works or not. But Jane Parks-McKay promises that it's for real. It's a reduced-calorie cake made with diet soft drinks.

She says, "Take a favorite cake mix and add only diet soda. Do not put in eggs, milk, oil, water, or whatever. For light-colored or spice cake, mix in diet Sprite. For chocolate or dark-colored cake, use diet Coke. Bake as the directions say, let cool and ice with low/non-fat whipped cream. I tried this for a church potluck and it took care of my sweet tooth without the guilt."

Jane says that you should substitute the same amount of liquid that the mix calls for. If it requires a half-cup of oil and a half-cup of water, for example, use a full cup of soft drink. It's normal, Jane says, to have a certain amount of "foam factor."

Diet Coke Cake

1 box Betty Crocker Devils Food cake mix
10 ounces of Diet Coke

Mix together, adding more or less Diet Coke to get a nice batter.

Spray a 9X13" (or larger) baking pan with non-stick spray, and lightly flour.

Bake at 350 degrees until it springs back in the center when touched.

There was some confusion on the WWW board as to the points per slice. So if you are counting points I would do the counts yourself.

Servings: 24 / 2 points or 12 3-4 points (there was some major debate depending on the cake mix used I think.)

Could also use this recipe with other diet sodas/cake mixes for example:
diet ginger ale/strawberry cake mix
diet mountain dew/lemon cake mix

there are a lot of recipes for Coca-Cola Cake that specify that you should NOT use diet coke.

I've done it in a cake before for the kids. It turns out fine if you substitute the Coke for the water and half of the oil. You still need the eggs though.

Lots of people responded with a chocolate cake/coke recipe. Have you ever tried a yellow cake with diet cream soda? YUM Top with light cool whip and you can have a couple of cupcakes without a moment of feeling guilty.

Why on earth would anyone do that? I would guess that you replace the water with the diet coke. It would make for a disgusting cake though. For a yummy cake, replace the oil with applesauce!
