Good point. Jesus taught us to pray, "OUR Father..."
A religion whose worship is too vertical ends up with the belly-button starring spirituality you have described.
The early church identified COMMUNAL worship of God as primary, with the breaking of the Bread, with both a horizontal and vertical elements.
"...By his incarnation the Son of God has united himself in some fashion with every human being." This saving event reveals to humanity not only the boundless love of God who "so loved the world that he gave his only Son”, but also the incomparable value of every human person..." *
That is not a selfish religion.

Religions do not breed selfishness. It is human being who do not understand the philosophy of the religions. In fact most of the religions teach us not to be selfish. However, most of religion believer only believe their own god. They thought that other than their own god, the rest of the god are devil. Therefore, they only show kindness to their own group of people. They are selfish & cruel towards other group of people. History shows that a lot of war started because of religion.

As least we have a choice whether to become Christians. Unlike those Muslim in Malaysia, they don't have a choice. They don't have freedom to religion conversion. We are born with a choice in life. We are not raised in a pathetic, incorrigible and selfish ways. I thank GOD I'm a Christian.

I think you are confusing cause and effect. I think selfishness breeds religions. Everybody wants to live forever(or at least thinks they do) so the strongest religions sell it hard (with various options and custom features added).

Religions breed unity and peace but people breed selfishness because of the lack of undestanding.

elliottandelliottmtg,
It sounds like what you've made it that way. Do you not pray for others also?
But do not ever feel guilt for what you've been given, the sight to see, the ears to hear, the faith to pray, the trust of God, because it's what sets you apart of the world. And you are not of the world.

Selfishness come from human behaviour. If your my, my, my and my become your ego. You will be blind for truth. You will close your ears from different perception. And at last you will become the most selfish person on world just for a sheep title. Just watchout from your thinking

God also says that you shall confess your love for Him in front of your peers (hence Church) He also says that you shall commune with other believers and spread his word...(hence religion)
My only refers to your personal relationship with Jesus and with God...whom you give praise to.
