It seems like it would be a powerful tool for the police officer to hear the conversations that occur directly after stopping a car but before engaging the driver. I believe we have high powered microphones that can listen through glass. Is there legal issues?

It is possible with a laser (you bounce it off a window and it picks up the conversation) but they have to have permission from a court just like wiretapping.

I don't think they can do this but maybe some day. It would be especially helpful now with all of these terrorists activities going on. That's why I feel it is okay for the NSA to listen into phone conversations. That's how they caught those guys in London. They aren't going to bother normal people who are chatting about insignificant things. I would rather be safe than sorry.

anyone can use that technology. the police have no expectation of privacy while in their patrol car, and neither does a private citizen. The technology is actually very inexpensive.

Is there legal issues? Yes there is. They would need a warrant to do that or anything they hear would not be allowed in court.

The latest tech is that they have a video recorder on the dash with sound. It has helped solve crimes for which there were no witnesses.

Yay!

Police do have ears. If your gangsta rap is vibrating the windows blaring "Cop Killer", then don't expect a friendly visit.
