It is more or less true. What it does is slow down your metabolism so that you will not burn calories as quickly. That will tend to make it easier to store fat on days when you eat more calories than you burn.
Everytime you eat your body actually speeds up its metabolism a bit. So eating many small meals is better than just eating 1 large meal. That is why trying to lose weight by skipping breakfast is not something that works. Breakfast gives your metabolism a kickstart each day which is why it is the most important meal of the day.
You are much better off calculating the number of calories you require in a day, reduce that by 5 to 10 percent and then divide by 6 and eat 6 divided meals throughout the day. That way your body always has a little bit of calories to run on, but not quite the amount that it requires. This causes the body to shed fat in order to get the additional energy it needs.

If the body finds nothing to work on for energy, it does go to your fat storage for its needs. Missing meals is common place anymore.. the weight problem exists only if you over indulge when eating next time. The same reason most diets are ineffective.. after the psychological starvation of preferred foods, there is over indulgence when finishing the diet.. the weight returns and even more this time.

Skipping one meal probably doesn't make much difference (unless you pig out because you are so hungry).
But constantly eating a very, very low calorie diet can reset your metabloism downward and "conserve" fat. This is theb "survival mode" you've heard about and someone has falsely interpreted it to mean that every time you go hungry you "reset".

True, by not eating the body thinks there is a scarcity of food and slows down your metabolism in order to store fat.
To speed up your metabolism eat smaller meals more frequently and your body will think there is an abundance of food and will get rid of the stored fat.

There is a tendency to to gorge yourself later on in the day if you skip a meal. I would recommend breaking down your meals into 5 small portions. Decent sized breakfast, light lunch and a balanced dinner. With of course a couple of apples or granola bars for snacks between meals to stave off hunger.

It may, but that isn't the point. You cannot gain weight over the long run, unless you eat more calories than you burn, and you cannot loose unless you eat less than you burn..... In the short run, who cares what happens?
