Consider your reasons.
What is your job? What sort of travel do you hope to do?
Where do you currently live? What is your ancestory? What languages sound nice to your ear?
I would use those to advise you. Also your aptitude w/ new language, because some are harder to learn than others. Al
I think that for the most part, it is very helpful in the US for people to know Spanish. But any foreign language is useful.
Good luck!
Buena suerte!

Learn Chinese. It will be the most difficult of them all, but it is worthy (I've learn Chinese, Japanese, French, and German) Because China is growing now, and the language becomes more and more important. Look back 10 years ago, when there was not so much people wanted to learn Mandarin. But now there are so much Chinese language school in all countries. In fact, many schools in Asia and in Europe have Mandarin as a special subject (I dunno bout in OZ, or states or Africa, never been there). And I'm sure in maybe 10 years, more or less, Mandarin will be as important as English. And you have to remember, Chinese people are every where, they are the biggest population in this earth. So you can speak Mandarin almost every where.
So with this fact, I think you can see, that people realize the importance to learn Chinese. If you wanna be competence to compete in this globalized world, then learn Chinese! It's the right thing for your future ;-)

It depends on where you live... America, Europe ??
It also depends what work/studies you plan to do, your cultural affiinities... Learning a language is not only a technical thing, also (if well teached) a way to open to other cultures.
If I was American, I would choose Spanish or French, which are used in many places worldwide - and there are Spanish and French histories in discovery and beginning of America.
The use of Chinese and Japanese is mostly in one place (even if they are leading countries). But I know people that are into Japanese culture, and that led them to learn Japanese...
Spanish : - many places in South and Central America,
- minorities in the USA (California I think),
- but in Europe only in Spain.
French : some places and islands in America (Canada, Carribean, Fr. Guyana, St Pierre et Miquelon), part of Switzerland, Belgium, many places in Africa and in the Pacific Ocean... A bit more difficult than Spanish, maybe, but not sure of this.

Mandarin Chinese is the most spoken in the world, French follows in second. Study the language that interests you. I would recommend Mandarin or French though.

I would recommend French. I have studied French for 4 years but didn't continue, so I have forgot almost everything I learned before. But I really enjoyed it.
Also, it would be very helpful later when u get a job in Europe for example.

Spanish or Chinese will be the most useful to you in the future. Spanish moreso than Chinese ~ and it's easier to learn because the alphabet is similar.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO STAY IN AMERICA THE BEST ONE TO LEARN IS SPANISH YOU WOULD NOT HAVE MUCH USE FOR THE OTHERS UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO THE UN TO BE A TRANSLATOR OR IF YOU ARE GOING TO LIVE IN ONE OF THE OTHER COUNTRIES THE BEST WAY TO LEARN A LANGUAGE IS TO BE WHERE YOU CAN PRACTICE IT AND NOT JUST IN SCHOOL

Spanish and French = easy and you're more likely to use Spanish if you live in North America and French if you're in Europe.
Japanese = I doubt you could do it.
Etc. = Stick to working on your English instead, eh?
