The Truth about Pit Bulls
Don’t believe everything you have heard!
. There are an estimated 4.8 million registered American Pit Bull Terriers that have been selectively bred for
companionship and conformation dog shows. This number does not include the unregistered APBT’s,
which would add significantly to the 4.8 million.
. The pit bull breeds have NEVER been bred for human aggression. These dogs, like all other dog breeds,
are not born inherently mean or bad! They can, like any other breed, become mean through lack of train-
ing, abuse, neglect and irresponsible ownership and breeding.
. Pit bulls do NOT have locking jaws; the pit bull’s jaw is identical to any other dog of a similar size.
. Did you know that pit bulls consistently rate higher in the American Temperament Society’s tests every
year than many common “family” dogs? The three breeds that make up pit bulls rate around the 83% pass-
ing whereas the Golden Retriever is in the 82%, Greyhound is in the 81%. You can view the list at
ww.atts.org.
. The United States Custom Service recruits pit bulls from Shelters to train in detection. One of their all
time top dogs was Popsicle, who was rescued from a refrigerator during a raid. Popsicle currently has the
highest money bust to date.
. One of the top-rated Search & Rescue teams in the U.S. is Kristine Crawford’s American Pit Bull Terrier,
Dakota. Kris has two other SAR pit bulls! They were hand-picked by NASA to aid in the recovery of the
astronauts from the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. They were also
involved in the Laci Peterson search and just recently saved a
woman’s life. You can learn more about Kris and her team at
www.forpitssake.org.
. President Roosevelt, Anthony Robbins, President Wilson, Fred
Astaire, General Patton, Humphrey Bogart, Helen Keller, Thomas
Edison, Bernadette Peters, Michael J. Fox, Ken Howard, Shannon
Elizabeth, Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson, what do these people have in
common? They are ALL the proud owners of pit bulls!
. There are many pit bulls who are productive members of society.
Trained to be service dogs, therapy assistants, educational dogs, nar-
cotics detection, actors, search and rescue and more. Many have be-
come public heroes saving peoples lives.

i am very glad you put that info out there for people to see. Too bad we can't get every body to read that, huh. Especially the people who know only about pit bulls what the news cast says about them. Don't you just love those people. In my town pit bull breeding has been banned. In order to own a pit bull inside city limits you must first-register it with city. two-have it micro-chipped
three-have insurance on it. four-it must be fixed. Which for the people that really take care of thier dogs and are the "right" kind of owners for pits then this is not a big deal. their dogs are their family and they will do anything for them. It's the bad owners who fight them that are pissed. But a lot of good dogs will be euthanized because of this law. It's sad. I wish the news would flash a clip of what you just typed to the general public...whether it makes a difference or not at least someone would be trying to get it out there...Good job

I am so glad to see that someone else is helping to fight of the bad reps these guys get. Thanks for posting this!! The only thing that makes a pit bulls jaw different from a regular dog, is that the jaw muscle wraps around the entire head. As other dogs stop at the jaw bone, near the ear.

You're barking up the wrong tree, Michael. Few people here are going to argue with anything you've said...but everything you've said has absolutely nothing to do with the problem Pit Bull owners are facing. Want to see what I mean? Just do a quick search on here for "pit bull" and see what you get.

First, you'll find over 1700 questions about pit bulls (search both "pit bull" and "pitbull") - far more than for any other breed of dog. What does that tell you - that possibly Pit Bulls are the most overbred, overpopulated breed in the country right now? Second, take a look at the questions. Within just the past few hours, you'll see questions like "How can I make my pit bull stronger?", "How do I train my pit bull to attack?", "How can I train my pit bull to be a guard dog?" and many other similar questions. THIS is the problem, and THIS is where you should be directing your energies. Pit Bulls are in fact currently the most overbred (and for all the wrong reasons) mishandled and abused breed in the world, and people are justified in being afraid of them for these very reasons notwithstanding everything you list about the breed. If you REALLY care about the breed, then put your energies toward doing something that will rescue it before it becomes too late:

- Support legislation that will prohibit anyone other than an AKC licensed breeder to breed pit bulls.

- Support legislation that will require neutering of all pit bulls other than those owned by AKC breeders and those who actively show their dogs in AKC conformation.

- Support legislation that will require ALL owners of pit bulls to undergo specific and regular training in order to acquire and regularly renew a special license to own their dog.

These are a few I can think of off the top of my head. You may not like them, but if you truly want to save the breed, you're going to have to seriously look at putting some requirements in place that will weed out the idiots and sociopaths who are buying and breeding them for the very purpose of ruining them, otherwise more and more communities are going to take the easy way out and simply ban the breed altogether.

You - and the many others who have posted things similar to yours on here - can extoll the merits of pit bulls until you're blue in the face, and all it will take is one instance of some poor pit bull mishandled by some brain dead yahoo out there savaging some little kid to completely negate everything you've said in the mind of the general public. Despite everything you've offered, the cold, hard fact is that the breed in general is now out of control, and unless and until those who care get really serious about bringing it back into control very soon, you might as well kiss pit bull ownership in this country goodbye.

We have 2 pitbulls and we breed them. We had to move out of the city limits to have them because they are banned in the city limits here. Our pits are the calmest and most loving dogs I have ever seen. They are big ole babies. Any dog can be vicious. Its just according to how they are raised.

I have always said that bad dogs come from bad breeding and bad training, where they are raised to be fighters.
