True (no offense meant to anyone).

It is called a Lingam. Alternatively Shiva Lingam (representing the male organ of the god Shiva).

The size is different from place to place. Some individuals will sometimes have a small one (as small as half an inch tall) as a personal amulet. And a big one in a temple can be as tall as 6 feet tall.

Cordially,
John

The Shiva Lingam is described by modern Hindus as an aniconic symbol. That means that it is not a representation of anything. They will be offended if you suggest that it is a representation of a penis. It is likened to the pillars that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob erected in ancient Israel as ways of worshipping the God of Israel.

However, speaking strictly historically, I think it is difficult to deny the symbolism of the male organ in the lingam. But I think it must be understood that sex is not inherently some dirty or evil thing. It can be a beautiful way to strengthen a relationship between a husband and wife, and it of course has much power because of the possibility of reproduction. Think about that. That is probably the most powerful that humans can ever be - to actually create other human beings! The creative power of God could be depicted in this way, and I don't think one needs to necessarily take offense about that.

Krishna worshiped Shiva, and Shiva worshiped Krishna. This is because all Gods are ultimately just facets of the one, formless God. Krishna does not disapprove of the worship of Shiva via the lingam.

I think it is important to understand that even if, historically, the lingam was a representation of the penis, if Hindus today do not accept that fact, then they are NOT really worshipping the male organ. They only worship that which they believe they are worshiping, namely, an aniconic symbol (or mark) of Shiva. This is to acknowledge what Hindus have in mind when they are worshiping the lingam.

The lingam can vary in size according to the particular depiction, and it is abstract.

I think Shiva's lingam only gets it on with Shakti, uniting the heavens and the earth - then there's the whole kundalini snake tantric chakra thing, but you don't want to go there unless you're ready for the ride.

Some Hindu beliefs use to have phallic symbols hang from the waist to bring good luck in fertility. Sri Krishna did more than 'play the flute'. Sri Krishna did his best to release man from suffering through understanding of themselves.

Be good.
