Well using polite English, I would say that I have to use the facilities or the restroom.

well...
for me i just say ..
"i need the restroom" and then i excuse myself.
i don't think there's a need to define whether you are going to pee or do your faeces. its to elaborated and details, and i don't think the others need details.
like imagine if females went " i need to go change my sanitary napkin, its the 3rd day of my period and its a heavy flow".
LOL!
well, hope you get what i mean ;)

I just say, I need to go to the rest room for any adult person in a proper setting.
If you are speaking to small children simplified it, and say "little boy's room, or little girl's room."
Even my dogs know understand the word, "POTTY" I use it all the time. I would be crude unless I am totally drunk.

Just say: (Excuse me), I need to use the toilet OR (Excuse me), I need to go to the toilet.
You dun need to explain whether you wanna pee or poop. It's not other people's business anyways. They dun need to know what you are doing inside there, right? ;-)

I don't know.
But in Japan, some English school said on TV commercial that "In the US, they say Nature is calling me".

Excuse me, I need to use the rest room.
Excuse me, I need to be excused for a minute.
You never have to let anyone know why you have to go to the bathroom. Just excuse yourself.

'can you tell me where the restroom/washroom/bathroom/toilet is please?'
You never have to specify what you are going to do there...you just have to ask the location.
