I'm in the military but I don't go to the M-16 range that often to qualify and another one is coming up soon and I'm a little nervous. I'm just trying to qualify 1st-time-go, not expert or anything. Any tips on how I can accomplish that? Or better yet, does anyone know the order of targets that come up? I don't think that's cheating...

In the Marine Corps, we fire at the 200yrds, 300yrds and 500yrds for qualifiying. Biggest thing, have a tight hasty sling or loop sling, correct sight alignment(front sight post should be clear, the target should be fuzzy), look through the right rear site (there are two, day and night), aim center mass, take a deep breath, let it out, hold no with no air(No more than 5 seconds), squeeze the trigger (don't jerk it or pull it). It should be a surprise to you when the rifle goes off. Keep your eyes open. Also, body placement plays a role. Align your body first so that you can simply raise and lower your rifle into position and roughly end up in the same spot. Quick trick, sit/kneel into position with the rifle aimed and you center mass. Then, close your eyes, wait two seconds, open them. You should be back into the same position. If now, adjust your body so that you are. I don't know at what ranges you'll be shooting at but make sure you have the right windage and elevation as well. Remember, 3/8 for 36 yrds and 300yrds. Adjust during zeroing. Also, front sight, POST GOES UP means the Shot should go down. Post goes down, shot should go up. Look at the range flags to determine windage. Also look at the trees if the flags are going wild. Most of all..... RELAX....BREATH....HAVE FUN!!! Good luck.

Being qualified as a expert marksman (but with a FN FNC; sights similar to the one of the M16-A1) I will give you a simple advice :

Take a deep breath
Stock well blocked into your shoulder
Aim Center Of Mass
Align Front Sight on the target
Bring front sight at center of the your rear sight
Press gently the trigger with the tip of your finger
and NEVER CLOSE YOUR EYES

Don't get nervous, breathing control, trigger control, and front site front site front site.

When you breath in start SLOWLY squeezing the trigger, right before you take a breath in you should be firing your shot, it should be startling you, keep your eye on the front site.

Get your front site tip on your target
Close your eyes and take a breath once you breath out open your shooting eye and see if your front site tip is still on the target if not adjust yourself and repeat if it is in the right spot -
then take another breath breath out slowly while squeezing the trigger directly back to you. Remember sqeeze it slowly then once it fires you should be startled. If the round is off and you have done all of that you should be adjusting your windage, the back site aparture. But remember practice makes perfect, breathing control, trigger control, and front site front site front site!!!

Tighten up on the rifle. It should be fiercely locked between your cheek, shoulder and arm. If you are right handed and flinch, the rifle tends to move right, so if you have that problem, aim a little left. Try to be consistant. It's easier to fix something when you are doing the same thing wrong every time.

aim center mass. aim center mass. aim center mass. do not fire at the 250's or 300's. no matter how many shots it takes, make sure you knock down the 50's, 100's and 150's. only take one shot at the 200's. this the way i qualify.
