Often because it forces them to consider their own spiritual matters that they may for whatever reason not be comfortable doing. For example its sometimes very hard for someone who is having marital problems to discuss anything about marriage. Or for someone in addiction to discuss anything dealing with the process of recovery. When we are forced to look at ourselves rather than just being able to be light hearted about everything and "laugh it off" .... when its a matter of life and death and not only that but ETERNITY..... the weight is often too much for some to be able to deal with...... usually because they are trying to handle the load..... alone......

I can see three reasons here:
1. they don't believe in god
2. They are/have commiting sins, so when people start talking about religion, they'll remember the sins and starts feeling uncomfortable, just like the psycho thing...
3. It gets really annoying when people address god as Jesus when you believe in Allah vice versa. Its also annoying when people refering to Quran in a discussion when you're not a Muslim, don't you think so? Knows the readers first before addressing something, it might get someone angry. That's why people prefer a general discussion compared to spiritual matters.

p/s: can you click on the link below and see how annoying this is, then you might understand why people prefer general discussion

I think people are uncomfortable discussing spiritual matters because they are embarrassed by what they believe and are afraid people will make fun of them. This goes for having a belief in god as well as NOT having a belief in god.

They are afraid of what might happen to them, especially with the volatile political and religious culture of America these days.

It could be because religion can get very controversial, and most people probably prefer to avoid controversy. We would like to just be peaceful and get along, and avoid arguments. Many of us have not learned how to argue peaceably.

Another reason may be that some people feel spirituality is too personal to be discussed. I think it may make people feel somewhat vulnerable to open up that much.

Honestly I believe it's a lot of things. Most humans have this need to be "right". With something as varied as "religion" it's hard to discuss because no one wants to hear that someone else thinks they are wrong. Most people are socially conditioned to believe that religion and politics are not polite conversation, generally because opinions are like fingerprints...... everyone has them but no two are alike. Growing up my Grandma always told me that your not suppose to "argue" the bible. But I feel that as long as your discussing it..... Religion lives on. And honestly in my opinion this world needs religion.... what would this world be like if there was no fear of repercussions?? Scary to think of! But hey..... thats just me.

Religion has become to many a non issue because there has been so much corruption in churches. Spirituality is a very personal subject. It is also one of the things that only we can work on. Everyone has to take charge of their own soul. Many folks, I feel,
have fallen for the belief that they have to have a priest to understand spirituality. Investigae truth for yourself as you find it.
God is within. Seek Him and find Him there.

Because you have the ones that get bent out of shape because something is going on in the inside. And they don't want to hear about God because they are not right. So it makes that other person uncomfortable, to were they are too scared to go there with the person that will slash out on them.

It seems to make people feel vulnerable by sharing their deepest beliefs. I love hearing what different people have to say, it's a learning experience. I'm always willing to share my thoughts even if others make fun of them. I guess it's a personal choice weather to share or not.
