Just recently (about a week ago), my dog started shedding again. He's done this before around half a year ago, and I noticed it's because of his incessant scratching. Although, right now, I've come to notice what appears to be red bumps or mosquito-bite-type bumps that's very itchy to him. His incessant scratching and gnawing not only makes his coat shed, but he's practically wounding himself in the process. So far, it's on his sides, on his back, and one on his stomach. They're not all over, maybe just around 4-5, but I just really need to know if it's serious.

So please, does anyone know?

Based on your suggestions, here's what I'm planning on doing first: get him some Advantage and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I'll take him to the vet - does that sound ok?

PS - Right now his diet is Chicekn Soup For the Dog Lover's Soul and the occasional human food here and there. I'm going to start feeding him some wet food for variety (like the 1$ packets from Iams Select Bites.) He's had the same diet (with wet foods on and off) for the past couple of years.

Most likey they are fleas.. I get flea bites from time to time and it shows red itchy bumps, on us.. So, it you were to take all the hair off any pet, you're see they would have many bumps all over them.. Buy some flea medication like Frontline or Advanage.. It's like 15 a tube, but i only get it in the summer and fall then after that, you should not have a flea problem, they don't like the cold..

Before the Advantage, a lukewarm bath with medicated shampoo. I have a dog that has that reaction to fleas, another that has allergies like that, and one that had mange that looked like that. If he has longish hair, a conditioner would be in order also. Call your vet and ask the correct dose of Benadryl for a dog his weight to help with the itching. Neosporin or first aid cream to sooth and help heal. If no improvement in a couple of days, off to the vet. Even if it's mange, trying to manage it at home for a couple of days should not cause serious or lasting harm. Dogs get mosquito bites too, and some can get an inflammatory reaction to them.

If you did not have him on any flea/tick meds, get him on one right away....Frontline or Advantage.......Take him to the vet and have him examined. My dog had real bad skin and fur issues, very similar to yours, and we found out she had a thyroid problem which contributes to the skin problem. Once we got that under control, we changed her diet to Nutro. Do not feed your dog food bought at the local supermarket. They have both dry and wet food. Give the dog omega-3 supplements.....you might be dishing out a bit more out of your pocket but at least you will not have a sick dog! it is well worth it to have a happy and beautiful dog. Forget the $1 Iams bagged food......not good. Make sure you give him/her a good walk or two each day, and plenty of water. You have to be consistent with the flea medication in order to stop fleas. You can always call your vet and he might give you some meds for the bites now so they do not get infected. Mine was given Clavamox for 10 days, and the vet also got her on predisone (steroids) for some time until the skin condition improved. But after you see a vet, get him good dog food and in a couple of months or so, you will begin to see the difference.

Check him for fleas first. If you can't find any it's probably hot spots or an allergy.
My dog had this and I changed his brand of dog food and he healed up and his hair grew back.
I used antibiotic cream on the sore spots.
I bought a small tube at rite aid.

He might e getting flea bites when he's outside. Some dogs can be allergic to them. My dog is allergic to almost everything(including flea bites) so we give her benedryl(the dye free kind), two gelcaps, twice a day. She's about 45 pounds.

I think your dog has fleas. Advantage is really good for that. Your dog is a long haired dog and it is hard to notice all the fleas on it but try bathing the dog with flea shampoo if you do not use Advantage. Also your dog may have a tick but you would probably notice that.

Friendly Hello,

Sounds like you dog could have fleas. I perfer Frontline. If you dog has fleas you should also take a stool sample in to make sure it does not have tape worms from fleas.

well it could be just about anything, but first and easiest to treat is for fleas, this is prime flea season and some dogs are actually allergic to fleas, two of my dogs are and they will rip out their hair in patches and leave themselves all scabby if left unchecked. I use frontline monthly on them. it could also be an allergy to just about anything. if the flea meds dont help take your baby to the vet. she sounds miserable.
