Well first off, you learn who your real friends are, because after HS is over you don't see them ever again unless you or them make an effort to do so. You figure out very soon that "being cool" was a big waste of time. You will learn to love your new freedoms and hate your new responsibilities as well as be increasingly frustrated with trying to figure out what you wanna do with your life. (one suggestion: go to college right away, if you tell yourself your going to take a year off, you will likely end up not going to college at all). You will better understand the importance of family and begin to create a second family in your close friends. You may also begin to explore your belief system, do you really believe the the things that you were brought up to believe, you very well may but you may also begin to search for something more meaningful or openminded. While during High School you were searching to find yourself, you will now begin figure out who you are without necessarily trying to.
