So almost everyone knows about the crusades almost a millennium ago. The best knights in Europe decide to take a quest on destroying all Jews and finding the Holy Grail. Did they ever find it? All stories I ever heard never end, they just kind of fade off in an eclipse. Whether they are true or not, shouldn't there be an ending? Did they all die? Did they convert to Judaism? Or did finding the Holy Grail kill them? Has anyone ever thought that they never told anyone what happened because they knew what the truth was and that it would change religion and the world forever?

Next question is, how do you know your right? These happened a thousand years ago. The facts aren't straight like the bible isn't straight. You all have a variety of answers, but do we even know why it REALLY happened and how it REALLY ended?

First of all, the Crusades were never about destroying the Jews. It was first started by Pope Urban II in the attempt to reclaim Jerusalem from the Muslims. The Crusades mostly ended because "with King Louis IX of France'sdeath, the Crusades died out with a whimper and not a bang. Continued military failure was a principal reason for their end. For a chronicle of military and political ineptitude, coupled with sheer hubris, they have no comparison in history. The Crusaders had victory in their grasp four times. They won the First Crusade in battle, had a trade almost in hand in the Fifth and Seventh Crusades, and negotiated a victory in the Sixth Crusade, and in the end they still managed to lose it all. Where else can we find a war that was won four times and still finally lost? Even the most ardent backers of Crusades were able to see eventually that the strategy was not working. Moreover, Europe in 1270 was a very different place than it was in 1087. Rising European prosperity and the increasing interest in internal affairs helped to lessen interest in the Crusades. The concept of crusading was also discredited by "crusades" against Christians (for example, aberrant sects like the Albigensians) or rulers who otherwise displeased the Pope. That is why the Crusades ended. Hope that helps.

Does anyone actually know who led the crusades???????????

I'm not talking about the armies that fought, but who was behind the crusades? Who instigated them?--- What denomination?

The crusades ended because the pope was taken into captivity.

This is not "a hit on the Catholics". It is a piece of history.

I was raised a Catholic. I am also a German.

I cannot take it personally when the atrocities committed by Hitler are attributed to Germany.

EDIT: I know the answers to my questions.
I am convinced through my studies on the crusades and dark ages that it really happened. I did not study Biblical writings for this. There is a lot of great history out there.

I know why it happened and how it ended. I told you how it ended earlier. Folks it wasn't the Jews and it wasn't the muslims that were persecuted!

Your history is really screwed up. The purpose of Europe was not to kill the jews. They wanted to free Jerusalem from the control of Muslims. Finding the holy grail and other holy sites was just side quests.

Basically 2 things ended the crusades. The main thing is they were too expensive and most europeans were already worn out by the time they got down there and lost pretty quick.

2nd reason was that the Black Plague changed the economic and political scene of Europe. People decided it was better to trade with the Mideast and make their physical lives better back home.

I know about the crusades that were supposed to re-take Jerusalem from the Muslims and the crusades against the Turks. This is the first time I have ever even heard about a crusade to destroy the Jews and it has never been mentioned in any of my history books. Perhaps you could tell us where you got your information from.

Islam fought back and conquered Jerusalem from the Crusaders, by Saladin. Islamic forces, back in the day, were very powerful and were never destroyed by the Crusades. They never reconquered Jerusalem again.

Be good.

the crusades ended partly in due to the renaiscance> the crusades were in part due to christian retaliation against the muslim invading armies that were torturing christians in the middle east, therefore the christian knights were sent to rescue and protect the christians, but also to prevent the holy city of Jerusalem from falling into muslim control>
