I just don't get it! I read a huge story in the paper today about 3 family pit bulls mauling some kids in Cary, IL.
I try so hard to like pit bulls and give them the benefit of the doubt, and some ARE great dogs, and there have been plenty at our animal shelter. I don't like to add on to all the prejudice about them since not ALL of them will bite, but I just don't know. The only thing I thought of while reading that story was that the owner just HAD to have done something wrong with the dogs. Pit bulls should NOT be illigal, never. But they should ONLY be owned by certified owners or something. People who can pass certain tests, people who have the brains to be dealing with them, not the mexicans living down the street.
I think maybe we should slowly transition them into something else - war dogs, police dogs, search dogs, something like that. They should NEVER be around little kids. But then again, I don't trust little kids with any animals.
The pits just can't win. They don't know right from wrong, but unfortunatly they just can't fit in with our society. People don't spay and neuter. They breed them just for extra drug money. They don't give a damn about society and the well-being of the dog. They are just self-centered people with nothing but themselves in mind, and others are suffering.
You will always have aggressive dogs. If you get rid of pit bulls, Dogo Argentinos will be next on the list. Then Saffy's. Then who knows what. Someone will breed something with something else and you'll have another "problem dog"
There just has to be something else we can do with the pits instead of banning them and killing them all.

A pit bull is no more likely to attack than any other dog is. Pit bulls get more attention when they do attack because they are so powerful and they can do a lot of damage. Most pit bulls will stay even tempered their entire lives. A pit bull is not a dog for everyone because not a lot of people know how to handle a powerful breed of dog. I'm sure that there are some pit bulls that are just naturally aggressive. But like I said that's possible in every breed. It shouldn't be blamed on the breed. Just like you can't blame all crimes on a certain race of people. There is good and bad in everybody.

think there should be a more strict screening process for people who want to own pit bulls. Too many "thug" type people are getting them, and then training them to be aggressive. But at the same time, I've seen stories on the news of a really friendly pit bull attacking the owner for no reason. I realize that any dog has the potential to "flip out," but the bite of a pit bull is a lot worse than any other dog (even the "bad breeds"), and they don't let go willingly.

I have a level head and no they should not be illegal. I own one and he is my service dog. If you get a APBT from aplace or person who dose not know the blood line of the dog you are asking for trouble. The person that gave me my dog as bred them for over 20 years, she knows her dogs and never sells or gives one away if shows sing of aggression. All good pit breeders are like that. It is a fact that not all breeders are that way. They look to breed the most aggressive dogs because that's what they need. If you get a pit get one from some one you have investigated thoroughly. MY uncle and now his sons have been breeding dog for over 75 years, past 25 have included pit bulls. They have never had one of their dogs turn on anyone from the coon hounds to the pit bulls all were will bred and trained dogs. At one time I would have been pissed off about what you ask but I have come to see there are problems. But making pit bulls illegal is not the answer. The kind of people that make monsters out of these dog don't care if they break the law. Only thing it will do is rip pets from homes who only crime is being a pit bull

Pit bulls are banned in near by towns where I live, but are allowed here in my town as long as you have a 5 ft fence, don't leave it in your yard alone, mussel it in public, etc. Anyway, I had a neighbor who had a pit, and he always let it rome free. I called the pound numerous times but they never came. I was afraid my kids would get hurt. I have 3 little boys. Thankfully they moved. The messed up part was that my other neighbor has this little dog that weighs about 10 pounds and it got lose so a neighbor called the pound on it. They came right out. How messed up was that? Anyway, I honestly beleive it is how you raise them, but any dog can attack. I teach my boys not to pet any dog if you don't know it. I am in Missouri by the way, and what brought the seriousness of pits to my attention was a story on Oprah and my local news. When the pound did nothing I e-mailed the news station for info and they gave me the right people to call, but by that time they had moved.

I don't think it would be that easy to make it illegal to own a pit bull, but I think it is a bad idea for anyone (especially those with children) to own one with all the dangers of random violence. There was a boy here in Michigan also that was recently mauled and killed by the family pit bull... he did nothing to antagonize the dog an the dog had no previous signs of aggressiveness. No matter how many websites with pictures of pit bulls with kids or pit bulls looking sad, I would NEVER own one with children in the house, or without. With all the incidents, maybe making owning one illegal would be a decent option.

I don't think they should be outlawed. As with everydog you need to be careful. My daschund almost took my nieces face off a few years back. We just locked him up(thankfully he didn't get her he just went after her face). I feel sorry for the pitbull because they are in the spotlight. I do feel sorry for the little kid that got killed. It is not just the pitbull, all dogs can attack at any moment. Especially if you have small children you need to be extra carefull with all animals. I had a cat maul my face when I was about 5. I still have scars I notice but not too noticeable for everyone else. I have been bitten by 3 dogs. A chihuahua, german shepard, and a daschund. So it is just not the pit, it is all dogs. So no, I don't think the pit should be outlawed. People need to realize that any animal can turn at any moment.

Where there is smoke there is fire as they say. Every single day, there is a newspaper article somewhere that is telling of some "wonderful" family pit bull pet that had always been wonderful, perfect, blah, blah, blah, that just killed some child or turned on their owner after years of bliss. Seems to be something to it and you cannot blame the people for wanting that kind of dog OUT. People are just blind to the facts and want to have their own selfish way and will get it unless there is a law and a punishment in place to prevent it.

you didn't say if these dogs had previous owners or not.... if not then the dog was probably spooked in some way...... I have a pit and a little one..... I have had to teach both my dog and child how to play together. I have also taught my dog what is appropriate and what is not... my family has raised "dangerous breed" dogs for generations all with out incident. I will add that my pit is 8 months old and i have had him since he was 5 weeks.

its all about training & breeding...
to much inbreeding will make a chi turn into a pit..
Its the owners fault usually if a dog is not socailized or trained correctly. Its NEVER the animals fault....
I need to edit this after reading the one above mine.
I was bit 2 years ago by a GOLDEN RETRIEVER so should they be banned? Should I have had it put down?? No, its the owners fault. Dont you dare say its the breed, that is a sign of ignorance...Mr Wizard!
