what are the basic steps of making a project?

i m a mca student and want tomake a project on hostel management and having no idea about it as it is my 1st project.

At first it seems to be a veru big job. But take it lightly and cooly.

First understand ur requirements. Get to talk with the people who are really involved in this work and see what will benefit them. What can be automated in their work.

Second, jot down all the points which u have got and try refining them one by one, making each one more clear.

Then i think u can prepare ur requirements document. This will always give u an idea of what is that u r planning.

Third, go the specification document. U should think about the flow of the program, the various screens u'll require, the fileds u'll require within the screens, whether any reports are required, and so on. This will again be a rough design only.

Once this is done, the most imporant part is to design the database, what are the various tables required and the fields required. This again may not be the complete picture.

You will then have to decide upon the functionalities and the vaious number of programs needed. Just the logic required in each program can be sorted out now. No further details required.

Once all these are in place, u can start the actual coding. This is when u actually create ur databse(it has to be the first one to be done). Then u can go on to write the programs. Here u need to think what all coding techniques and all u need to use.

In due course, ur specification document will start revising. This is a good sign of development. Even sometimes, ur requirement may change in between depending on the complexity of things being done. Never fear to change anything.

Once ur application is done, go into thorough testing and proper documentation.
