Because the human mind is prone to curiousity. At a young age, children don't foresee danger like we do as adults. So, when Mom says stay out of the tall grass, they want to know why, so they go to explore.

The whole experience of adolescence is a journey building your character as an adult. So children are constantly testing their limits, seeing what they can and can not do. What's okay, what's right and wrong, what's bad and what's really bad....that's why it's so important as a parent to not let your child get away with pushing their boundaries.

well when they are little 2 or 3, it is just because they are 2 or 3....when they are a little older, and they can understand right from wrong....it is because they are disobedient or disrespectful. When they are teenagers and still do the opposite, it is because they are turning their backs on what they KNOW is right and just thinking of ME ME ME.
Not to sound like a religious fanatic or something like that, if God is in your life, and you have good parents who are telling you what is right and just for you......you are acting in a sinful manner if you go against what they say.

Every child tests their parents to see how far they can push the adults. The key behind it, is to remember to keep your Guard up at all times. Secondly if you say something mean it. Carry through with what you said, dont ever back down. Then they know they have won. Remember thats your house and they will follow the rules or pay the price. Its your way or no way at all. You will get what you want if you follow my advice. Thanks for asking and Aloha from Hawaii

It's a time-immemorial game. Don't worry too much, just always be firm and always be consistent and always keep saying no. They want to see how solid you are. They want to know they have a good leader. That's why they challenge you. Dogs do that too.
You might have to simply be a little more annoying in your requests to them, as in make them prove themselves to you in little ways, all the time, you know, like little time-outs, stare at the wall for ten seconds thing.. etc. Good luck.

Well isn't that the truth. It is because they need to feel control in their life. By rebelling against or ignoring what mom and dad say as a child you feel more like an adult. "because parents get to do whatever they want." Well that is how kids see it anyway.

Because the consequences of doing the opposite are not enough. If they stand to lose enough they will be less inclined to do wrong.

I wish I knew. Mine either do the opposite or don't do at all. Maybe we should try reverse psychology.
