Is it a high end credit card and an invite only thing like the Black American Express Card is?

When I was younger, I thought it was another form of a department store credit card.

The Diner's Club card was the pioneer of charge cards. It works very similar to most AMEX cards where you are allowed to buy up to what you can "afford" as opposed to buying up to your limit, and it must be paid off in full every month. This may be why it is confused as a card of affluence (plus, the fact that it's hard to come by). Diner's club does offer a "Carte Blanche" which would be somewhat equivalent to the AMEX Black you refer to, just not as widely accepted by merchants.

Hope this helps!

Diner's Club was the first credit card. It emerged in the 1950's I believe. It has been bought out by Mastercard. I have had cards reflecting dual logos passed through my hands. In time, I think they may all come to be Mastercards. It is used very infrequently . I work in the hotel industry, and I have had thousands of credit card transactions pass through my hands. I probably have processed no more than 3 dozen Diner's Club transactions in that amount.
