My Grandad used to walk into a dark room and say,

"Bloody hell! It is blacker than the Black Hole of Calcutta in here!"

What is the Black Hole of Calcutta?"

The Black Hole of Calcutta was a small dungeon where troops of the Nawab of Bengal held British prisoners of war after the capture of Fort William on June 20, 1756.

According to an account by a survivor, 123 of 146 prisoners died of heat exhaustion in the confined conditions. Certain historians now believe the number to be at most 43.

Holwell had erected a tablet on the site of the Black Hole to commemorate the victims, but at some point before 1822 (the precise date is uncertain) it disappeared.

Lord Curzon, on becoming Viceroy in 1899, noticed that there was nothing to mark the spot and commissioned a new monument, mentioning the prior existence of Holwell's; it was erected in 1901 at the corner of Dalhousie Square, which is said to be the site of the Black Hole.

It was a jail in Calcutta where there was standing room only. People would die upright.

I understand that the prisoners were lowered into a pit with no way out except up.

For a change some Brits were taken prisoner in Calcutta and locked up in a dungeon. Many died due to the lack of air. They still did not get the hint that they were not welcome in India and stayed on for over 200 years
