How many godparents should a child have?
I know that I've seen a lot of people lately giving their children multiple sets of godparents. Recently two neighbors had children and both gave their children 8 godparents total.

Is that too much? Is it okay to have more than one set?

And additionally how many godchildren should one person have?
If you already have one godchild and someone asks you to be the godparent to their newborn should you turn down their request because you already have one?

Traditionally a child is suppose to only have one set of godparents. A godparent's job is to take care of the child if something were to happen to you. With multiple godparents, you are opening the door to a huge custody battle between all these people if the worst were to come. Don't do it. It started as a trend about five years ago and it makes no sense. People were only doing it because they wanted to spare feelings to those around them. This is your child, and godparents should be chosen on who is the most capable and loving towards your child. If you have more than one child, you need to consider this too. Most of us want our children being raised together if something were to happen. In today's day and age, that isn't always possible, so when choosing the other children's godparents, you have to make sure these people get along, will be civil to each other and maintain a sibling relationship between the children. I know the cool thing to do would be to choose your friends, but honey, these are your children's lives we are talking about and family is usually a better choice.

When it comes to being asked to be a godparent, although it's a great honor, if you don't feel that you could do it, politely decline, they'll appreciate your honesty. Godparent's have a great responsibility...one that should not be taken lightly.

well i think as far as a child having godparents they should one male and one female.i come from a catholic back ground and i have one of each.the reasone for having godparents is so that if anything happens to your parents you have someone to eather take care of you or someone who will support you in lifes neccisaties.i love my godfather more than anything he is one of the greatest men i know he is now 80 and i am 41 but i can still depend on him for great conversation.my godmother who was also my aunt has died.and as far as how many godchildren can a person have it would be up to the person being asked to be a godparent.my godfather has 3 and i dont think its to many because he has enough love for all of us.

it depends on the people and situation. You can have one set of godparents or two (two for you, two for your partner) or however else you see fit. I have two godfathers and one godmother becuase one of my uncles showed up late to my baptism and the other had to stand in for awhile. As far as godchildren for godparents I don't think it matters. Why do you think the movie the godfather is called that? He was godfather to a lot of people.

my children have 1 set of godparents0 the idea is if something happens to you- they take responsability-so- could you split your children between 8 godparents? I find that weird. as far as godchildren-how many can you handle if you have to step up and take responsability for them?

nicely, i will preface this by utilising clarifying that, in our kin, "godparents" have not have been given something to do with non secular instruction and are greater there to in hassle-free terms be sort of a "super" aunt/uncle... tuck an extra $5 into their birthday card each year, take them out for particular days each and every now and returned... that kind of ingredient. My young babies all have diverse godparents. they have each and every have been given a godfather and then a godmother. We picked those human beings from a pool of our maximum relied on/closest pals and kin. We picked human beings we like dearly, and who love our babies dearly. No regrets. i'm a godparent to my maximum suitable buddy's son, and my husband and that i are godparents to 3 of his nieces/nephews. i could circulate with your gut. Who provides a rip approximately those fancy-shmancy 'regulations' that look in place? %. the main suitable individual for the interest. You owe it on your new child.
