Dinosf pointed out your problem - the NTFS formatting on your hard drive cannot be used by Windows 98.

Though Windows 98 SE, properly updated, was a very fast OS compared to Windows XP, it is no longer supported by Microsoft. It is an orphan, abandoned by the Monster from Redmond.

You likely have wiped your hard drive information, so you'll need to start over from scratch. Boot the XP CD, or format c: /s and refuse any option to use NTFS. Then try the 98 installation again.

On the other hand, why not throw on Linux? Go to http://pclinuxos.com, download and burn the ISO named pclinuxos-p93a-junior.iso, and test it out as a Live CD.

One of the icons on the PCLinuxOS desktop runs an installation wizard to put Linux on your hard drive. Takes 30 minutes. Handles all the details. No more spyware, virus, money spent on upgrades or protection, no abandonment by the manufacturer, no registration or licensing concerns. Isn't that the way computing should be?

I do not recommend you to install Windows 98 instead of XP. Windows 98 has a lot of bugs and works bad with big RAM. However there must be no problem in you computer if you will install the Windows 98 on it.

Try the following:
1. Boot from floppy or recovery CD.
2. Format your drives to FAT32
3. Install Windows 98

It may be better way for you to have 2 OSs - Windows XP and Windows 98 on your computer. Read the following articles.

I can understand why you hate windows XP. First is make sure you have a good boot floppy delete the NTFS partition and create a FAT 32 partition and format the drive. My belief is that there may be too much ram in the system. If you can cut down the amount of ram to 384 MB or less and try installing Windows 98 again.

You need to make sure your devices/hardware has driver support for Windows 98. Thats probably the main reason why it's crashing or prompting you with the blue screen.

Personally, you're better off sticking with Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Both OS's have better support for newer devices and security. Windows 98 cant even utilize NTFS partitions or large disk partitions without using 2nd party software.

Nah, it should work. But if you are formating in fat16, your partitions can't exceed 2 Gigs. Use multiple partitions to get it to work. If you are formating in FAT32 you can format large partitions up to the 4 terabytes. You may be running into partitions put into place by the computer maker or XP. Go to your bios and find the make of your HD, seagate, western digital, maxtor, and go to their website and get whatever disk utility the pryovide to format your HD for win 98

I'm guessing your computer is set up on the NTFS file system instead of FAT and 98 will not run on NTFS, you would have to wipe the hard drive, re-format it as FAT and then re-load 98.
