The Shi'a believed that the son-in-law of Mohammad - Ali was to lead after Mohammad. Shi'a means "Party of Ali" or follower's of Ali. They follow Ali and his discendants as the spiritual leaders of the faith Mohammad and are called Imams. The largest group of Shi'a believe there were 12 Imams that taught and guided the followers over a period of 260 years. It is also through the Shi'a that the ancestry of Mohammad has been preserved.

The Sunni are followers of tradition that was established with the first Caliph - Abu Bakr - the first adult male to follow Mohammad (His wife Khadijah was the first and Ali was the first male). He was elected by the leaders of the various tribes which formed the Ummah or community as the first Caliph. The Sunni follow closely the traditions of Mohammad called the Hadith as the basis of their law and education.

Though currently Sunni's greatly out number the Shi'a today - and the democratic West usually sees numbers define the truth - in this case it would be a mistake. For one it does explain the fundamental division and the ramifications of this division that we see today. For that we have to look at the early history of Islam.

The last tribe that Mohammad brought under control was His own tribe in Mecca - the Quraysh. These had by tradition managed the spiritual properties of Mecca for hundreds of years. It was this tribe that continued to attack Mohammad and His followers in Medina. It was this tribe that eventually surrendered to Mohammad, allowing Mohammad to finally cleans the Holy place built by Abraham and Ishmael of all pagan idols.

The Quraysh believed that they should continue to hold this role in the new faith and that Caliph should come from them. They however passed over Ali which was the same house as Mohammad - the Hashim - and believed power to should be transfered to the house of the Umayya.

Soon after Ali' was finally elected as the 4th Caliph - the Umayya generated descension leading to the death Ali' and the establishment of the Umayyid dynasty. This is the dynasty that immediately proceeded across north Africa and into Iberia "converting" pagans on the way. This is dynasty that Europeans first encountered during the middle ages and Charlemaign drove back. This is the dynasty that established the first Islamic empire. So it is through the Umayyid that the Christian west learned of Mohammad.

The true character of this dynasty and the spiritual nature of Shi'a was demonstrated by the 2nd son of Ali - Imam Husayn. He with a small band of followers faced the army lead by the first Umayyid Caliph to certain slaughter. It is the martyrdom of Imam Husayn that demonstrated the worldliness and corruption that were the hallmarks of this dynasty - cementing the political and spiritual divisions in Islam and fueling the anomosity that continues to this day.

Though the Sunni inherit the legacy of 3 great but fallen dynasties - the Umayyid, the Abassid, and Ottoman - they are more connected to the schools of law that were developed during this period of which there are 4 major divisions. The Caliph was abolished at the defeat of the Ottoman empire in World War I which removed the political leader of the majority of Islam. Arguably the Shah was the political leader of the Shi'a which was abolished by the Iranian revolution in 1977. Neither Sunni or Shi'a have currently a single recognized spiritual leader.

The laws and traditions of Pilgrimage to Mecca were well established before Mohammad departed and hence all Muslims regardless of school or sect follow the same practices and divisions are not apparent. At least on this point all Muslims are unified.

Sorry for the names but the history of Islam is facinating and I have not done it justice here. But hopefully this will moviate some to look deeper into the history. It certainly does not lack drama and can help in understanding beyond the crude characterizations that many are throwing around now. And no I am not a Muslim but feel we should not disrespect any that are. The references below can help those that want to understand further.

In Islam all over the world They agree about the oneness of God They follow the same book - Quran(same words and letters all over the world). They follow the same prophet Muhammad . offer their prayers five time a day. fast in the month of Ramadan.Give charity (Zakat) which is the poor-due on the wealth of the rich go for hajj, pilgrimage to Mecca ...but they may have differnt opinions not on the basics

Those who follow some sayings and views of Ali (one of the early muslims leaders), as the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad , are called Shia. Shia means a partisan (party of Ali) and it started more as a political party to help Ali in his conflict with his political adversaries.

About 90% of Muslims are Sunni, the word Sunni is based on the word Sunnah which is an Arabic word means the Prophet's Doctrine. Sunnis believe in (GOD) as the One Creator and Mohammad is His last and final Messenger.

but you have to know that the sects in islam not like the sects in other religions in other religions1- they can change in their books for example the Catholic Bible contain 73 books while the Protestant Bible has only 66 in Islam no one can change any thing There is not even one word of difference between two Arabic Qur'ans, anywhere in the world. There has been no disagreements in history among Muslims as to what should and should not be in the Qur'an

The Sunnah or Hadith consists of the teachings, sayings, and actions of Prophet Muhammad. This information was meticulously reported and collected by his Companions. It is essentially an elaboration of the Qur'anic verses that shows how they are to be implemented in one's daily life ALLthe true muslims agree about that

sunnis believe that the inheritor of Mohammed should have been an experienced statesman steeped in Mo's philosophy. Shia's believe the succesor to Mohammed should've been a relative. Both successors were out of the picture very quickly, so it's mindboggling. Like all religious belief.

It is a sectarian rift based on the successor of Muhammad - eithe rhis grandson, or his son-in-law?? Either way, the hatred the two sects for each other is visceral, and left to themselves, will decimate the Muslim population.
