FAFSA.edu I believe is the site...or is it org. Anyway, it's basically your parents income tax info and yearly household earnings, your high school gpa and college attending etc on paper or online. You need to go to the website fill it out accurately and send it in. They will send you a pin number, you will need to use the pin to electronically sign it, your parents need one as well so you need a total of two pin numbers...one for you to use and one for your parents. After it's been signed by your parents and you and sent in, it'll be reviewed by your school(college) and the board, they'll send you a Student Aid Report or SAR...that'll determine wheather you are eligable for government grants or school scholarships. Fill out the FAFSA in January, that's very important and apply to colleges as soon as you get back to school, that way you'll get replies before January. That's also very important. I'm not a teacher but I worked at the Career Center at my old high school, my teacher beat it into me everyday for a whole semester my senior year.

Just be truthful about everything (except the one question about if you've ever been convicted of a drug offense). Joking. There is a Q about that, though. Go to the Financial Aid office at your school and ask them everything you can think of. Write down everything you want to know. See a counselor if you have to, and see how much they know. Go to the EOP&S Office. That's part of FA. Never put off any paper work. You'll regret it while waiting for that check to come, knowing that every day you wait could mean weeks more of waiting.
You'll need your taxes and social security card, Driver license or ID. They want to know how much you earned the year before, so if you have that info, bring it with you. You can do the FAFSA online, but still have to go into the FA office afterward, whether they say so or not. Give your online info time to register (few days) then go to the FA office.

FAFSA is the free application for federal student aid and you must fill out out to be considered for student loans, grants, and need based scholarships. You will need your household tax and income information (Yours and any that apply, depending on whether you're independent: parents, spouse). You will also have to know which schools you want to receive your information. At this time, you can only fill out the FAFSA online. I can't remember the site, but you should be able to access it off of any college's financial page.
Fill it out as soon as you can if you want aid this semester.

First off go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and have your 2005 tax papers available to fill out the financial aid application online. Make sure that you fill out the section that request's your school info so that once the application is processed it will be automatically forwarded to your school. You will be able to check the status of your application online, and once it is processed contact your school's financial aid office immediately, and they will basically guide you from there. You may check out my blog for more financial aid resources. Good Luck :-)

The finicial aid department at your school will help, and most will find you scholarships you didn't know they had. My first semester of college I went in and they found me over $2,000 in scholarships that I didn't know was available, so when I got the over check I was massively excited!

Talk to your high school counselor or financial aid office at the college you plan on attending for help filling it out and researching your options. Also try http://www.fastweb.com
Usually there are workshops held for seniors at high schools for parents and students. Try finding out if your district holds these events.

Your college should be able to tell you what you need to know. You can also go on FAFSA's website for instructions.
