The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the highest award that can be issued to any soldier/airman/sailor/Marine or civilian. It is issued by Congress and getting it requires much work on the action side and paperwork side. For a person in the military to get it, it would require an act that not only puts you in danger but also is deemed to go above and beyond the call of duty. Namely, you do it regardless of what could happen to you. Unfortunately, most MOH issued are issued post humously meaning they were given out after the person died. Examples of those that warrented it are those that jump on top of a grenade. Being the person manning a machine gun while letting the rest of your team move back and probably not making it yourself, attacking a gun emplasment on your own, etc.

You earn them by being nominated by your Commanding Officer, after comitting heroic acts during a time of war while under fire. The CO submits a request which must go all the way up through congressional approval.

The Medal of Honor is the highest honor bestowed upon a soldier. This certain medal is achieved by doing something VERY heroic without thinking of one's safety, such as risking your life in order to save allies.

First off...ANYONE can recommend somebody for a medal...the highest being the Medal of Honor...and the approval authority is congress..
