I would like to get a dog(large dog) that is a high watch dog and high guard dog, but needs to be somewhat independant I will be away for 8hrs a day, a dog that will want to jog about 8 miles a day or more, but if a couch potatoe I will consider. I live in a apartment that doesn't accepts dangerous breeds like pitbulls, rotweillers, chow chows. I don't want a medium or small size dog because I want some protection while jogging and when away from home, and because I like to wrestle a little with my dogs.

German Shepherds are very loyal, versatile dogs.

German Shepherd is nice, but it might be on your list. In most cases, German boxer is not on the list. They are great dog, You will find German line boxers have larger head and bigger muscles than American show-line. They also have better defensive drive. You won't be bother by some criminals on jogging path. They can run 8 miles, but they are not good with hot weather. Also you have to build them up before they can go long run. They will love wrestle with you as well.
For adult dog, 8-10 hours is not a problem by them-self, but as a puppy that can be a issue. That is not for just boxer, but all breeds of dog.
If your apartment has 35 Lbs limit on pet, Check out Bull terrier. They are small, but they have heart of lion. Great jaw power (Bite power). Will have problem with 8 miles run everyday.

A Lab would be great for you....Large but not too large..VERY VERY protective of owner and surrounding. You can train them to be retrievers, watch dogs, or family pets. They are easily trained to a schedule as well, so 8hrs alone will be fine. Since they are high energy dogs and will NEVER disappoint you when ready to leave the apartment. HOWEVER, when you return home after the programmed absence timer you have set for the Lab...DON'T expect to it to leave you alone until YOU decided yall are going out because it will not leave you alone until it prevails and has its best friend out the door for quality time :-). You wont be disappointed in a Lab at all.

an apartment is not an appropiate place for a large breed. The larger tha dog the more room they need. I would reconsider a different size dog or moving to accomodate the size of dog you want.

A lot of these answers say German Sheppard, and a lot of them have hip problems. I find the best mix is German Sheppard, Collie mix. They typically don't have the health problems of a German Sheppard, plus they are typically more friendly, and their coat will be beautiful no matter which breed they look more like.

I agree with the Shepherd or Lab. My one and only guard dog was a Leb/Shepherd cross. Saved my life.

Ok I don't know how large ure apartment is, but you could get a Great Dane. They're scary looking, but gentle giants at heart. Of course it would protect you out of love.:)

German Shepherds are great, but they can have health problems later in life. We have a boxer that is fantastic for us, active, but not overly so, and protective of me when I get intimidated. His favorite thing is to go for runs, too.
