The options we are looking for are: good fuel economy, room to fit 4 people and possibly 2 dogs or some gear, reliability a must. Is there such a vehicle out there? Thanks for any advice.

Honda CR-V

I get 30mpg in mine and enough cargo space to carry a large TV. A 1997 shouldn't cost more than $7000.

I have owned mine for over 8 years and it has been bullet-proof when it comes to reliability. Never had an issue with the engine or transmission or anything else for that matter.

Awesome car.

I think one of the best things to do before buying a used car is to visit the local library and go to the reference section for Consumer's Reports on Buying a Used Car. They will answer the questions of which ones are most reliable, the good buys and the ones the stay away from. A very valuable source for you and I've used it myself.
