In the past I have had many pets like
Cat (ran away)
Bearded Dragon (took back)
Guinea Pig (took back)
Gerbils (1 died, 2 took back)
2 Fish (both died)
My Step Dad's dog (died last year)
Most of the pets i had when i was much younger, like say 10-11. I said I would take care of them, but back then i was too young to be responsible. We had a dog before, a German Shepherd, that was my Step Dad's dog and he had died last year. I want to convince my parents to get a Malamute because they really appeal to me and I have a big yard along with wods to hike in and many other things that make my house a good place for dogs to live in. I asked my Mom and she says she doesn't want a dog right now becuase they are expensive and too much work. How do I convince her I really want one????

Bring the dog home...if they say no, sic him on them. No, really, do your research on them, show your parents how dedicated you are by telling them all the stuff you've learned, even the bad stuff. Try that. It will help.

%%% First of all check out three books from the library about dogs and dog training. When talking with your parents, just bring up casually something that you just learned from the books.

%%% Ask them if you can volunteer at your local shelter to help dogs, and learn more. (most shelters have a petting room, or a dog walking program, and need volunteers to just give animals attention)

%%% Study the books about choosing the right breed for your family, and comment on this often to them.

%%% Ask if you can give a dog from the shelter foster care for a week to see how a dogs fits in your family

%%% Do ALL chores as soon as asked

%%% Keep your room clean, and show that you are growing up and accepting responsibility..

Puppies live to be from 12-16 years old. Do you know how long you will be living in your parent's home? Do you plan to go to college or get married? Do you know where you will be in 15 years, when the old dog is needing very special care?

Your parents know that they are apt to get stuck with the dog when you have moved out, so it is really up to them to make the decision about whether they want the care and expense of a dog for its entire lifetime, even if you are the primary caretaker of it as a puppy.

If you can convince them that THEY really want or need the dog, then go for it!

it doesnt matter if you want one or not.. ultimately the dog will be the responsiblity of the parent...
all pets should be FAMILY PETS... that means the parents have to want them, because they will be the ones paying for the food, vet, training, supplies, emergency, etc.. and they will be the ones left with the dog when you move out or go to college (since few landlords accept dogs and fewer still will accept malmutes....

wait til you are older - save your money - buy a house - then get a dog...

Malmutes are not good dogs unless you have a LOT of time - they are known to kill cats so if your neighbours have cats you could be sued if your dog kills one...

also you said your "cat ran away" and you "took back" several other pets - all this indicates is that your parents are not taking pet ownership seriously so neither should you...

If you REALLY want this dog (and it seems like you do) then you should make lists to prove to your parents that you're ready. Make a list of the reasons why you really want the dog. More importantly, make a list of the reasons you deserve a dog.... you're responsible, etc. Be specific and give examples! You should show your parents that you're ready for the responsibility by doing more to help around the house. Another good idea is to do research on dogs to show them that you're serious.

well you could go to the pomona valley humane society. they have really cute dogs there looking for a home there only 100 dollars with shots. you should promise her that you'll give it all the attention it needs and you be more responsible than the other times. and if you really want a dog tell her you'll do ANYTHING and you mean it.

Convice her that you can take care of a dog. By picking up after yourself more or doing extra things around. Then maybe she will c that you can take care of things. That is how i got my turtles!
