Once you feel the conversation is starting to slip, EJECT. There is no need to keep falling down this slippery slope. You'll do so much better if you just cut off the convo now instead of waiting until the conversation sinks to a low point and having her decide to end it.
Always look to end a conversation on a high note instead of waiting until it slips to a low note. She'll remember how the conversation ended, so make her remember it as a good one.

I'm not sure how old you are, but if you are in any school, you could talk about upcoming classes, upcoming movies you want to see and why. You could talk about music and ask what kind of music she likes. I'm not sure how well you already know her, but you could just ask questions about her, her family, her interests, etc.

well if you can make a bed rock, you should be smoother than this!!
you need to just get off the phone.
well, i guess you can ask her about her day, about her job, family, and go from there. tell stories she can relate to.
