You can use nail clippers meant for people if you are very careful. Take the cat's front paw in your hand and press gently on the "knuckle" to make the claw appear. Look for the vein; you MUST be careful not to cut into that. Clip off only the sharpest tip at first. Most cats really don't mind. The back claws are much harder to clip; practice on the front claws until you and the cat are used to the process.

Get a cat nail clipper. Wrap the cat in a towel if you are afraid of getting scratched or if the cat is not accustommed to your manicures. My cats allow me to take their paws and clip their nails without so much as a 'meow'. Talk soothingly to your cat while clipping the nails. In time, your cat will get used to this process, and you can do it once every week or two and keep those claws short.

You only need to clip off the very tip of the cat's nails (you will see the pink inside, you can't cut that, it can bleed out) you can use human nail clippers, the flat type that you squeeze together, you just need to cut the nail side on.

Buy a cat tree, it'll dull the nails. Don't De-claw its very painful and nails are a cats line of defense. There are no alternatives. If necessary take the cat to the vet and get them trimmed.

You can use human nail trimmers, however one designed for pet animals is better and can be purchased for under $7. Additionally, I have included a website that shows a detail step-by-step on how to trim cats nails. :-)

Just ask your veterinarian to clip the nails for you and show you how to do it. I think it's better to let the veterinarian clip the nails.
