The problem is...
1. People who think their dogs are furbabies. Many people today have NO idea how to handle animals, just read some of the questions on this board. They are not in control, and have no idea how to be the leader. They will use Purely Positive training techniques on dogs that need a firm hand, not a bribe. There was a woman on here recently whose dog bit. She couldn't understand what happened, the dog was part of the family, he even ate at the table with them and slept in their bed. THAT was the problem! They are ANIMALS, not human children. I don't know when it was that the American public lost the ability to handle animals, but it is very sad, I see it every day. The dogs are not flipping out for no reason, the reasons are there if you look for them.
2. Unenforced leash laws. If AC would enforce leash laws, there would be very few attacks, not to mention it would solve the overpopulation problem. Slap the owners with big fines and a court appearance! Punish the irresponsible owners! Some attacks have happened after AC has failed to respond to complaints about the animal roaming. In the case of the attack in Kentucky, people had been complaining for a YEAR!
3. Parental supervision. Many attacks happen when kids are unsupervised with the family pet or wander into the neighbors yard. Parents need to SUPERVISE their kids! ANY animal can be unpredictable and to leave a kid alone with a dog is asking for trouble.
Many breeds are on banned/restricted lists somewhere. ANY breed is only a bite away from being on a list, and ANY breed can and will bite. Pits do not even have the highest percentage of dog bites, they are actually near the middle. However, the media loves to sensationalize any bite from a Pit Bull. A child has a much greater chance of getting struck by lightening or killed by their own parents than getting mauled by a Pit Bull. Should all parents be killed?

I think there should be a more strict screening process for people who want to own pit bulls. Too many "thug" type people are getting them, and then training them to be aggressive. But at the same time, I've seen stories on the news of a really friendly pit bull attacking the owner for no reason. I realize that any dog has the potential to "flip out," but the bite of a pit bull is a lot worse than any other dog (even the "bad breeds"), and they don't let go willingly.

Pit bulls were bred for fighting other dogs, so they tend to be dog aggressive. They were actually bred to be gentle to humans, lest they turn and fight their handlers, too. That would be too big a liability in the family dog. In the 1950's, pit bulls were advertised as the "All American Breed". They were touted as being gentle with all family members. No animal flips out and attacks for no reason, unless it has a mental disorder or is medically unsound. I suspect that the stores we hear about that happening is not the whole truth.
Did you know that in the 1980's and 90's, the German Shepherd and Rottweiler were subject to as much pubic scrutiny as the pit bull is today. They were considered dangerous dogs then, now they are considered family pets. I have a GSD, and I am very careful about what she does, I don't want a neighbor to get the idea that she is dangerous, so I've trained her very well.
When you have a potentially dangerous dog, it is your responsibility as an owner to make sure the dog is under control at all times. I think that a lot of pit bull owners forget that.
Pit bulls should not be banned, but since there attacks do often result in fatalities due to the strength of these animals, their owners should take extra precautions, to include obedience training and always keeping the dog on a leash, just like any other large and potentially deadly dog.

I don't believe any breed of animal should just be eliminated. My family has owned pit bulls or pit bull crosses my entire life. We live on a 400 acre farm and our dogs are used for rounding up cattle and are also just family. I do believe that there are a lot of "bad owners" out there that train their dogs for things that are not good. However, a dog is not just born mean. Just like people aren't just born mean. Something has happened in thier childhood to make them the way that they are. So blame it on some of the breeders or the owners but not the dogs. Also-if you check into it a dalmation is a lot more aggresive than a pit bull. You just never hear about them b/c people don't want to believe it. People hear the word "pit" alone and they want to talk bad about a breed that most of them have never been around in thier entire lives.
I would never give up my babies and have raised 2 step-children ages 4 and 5 with "Tiny Bear" my 6 year old male pit sleeping on the rug in thier room every night to make sure they are safe. I could never ask for a better baby sitter for my kids.
Also- parts of the stories you don't hear and never will are about how neighborhood kids like to torment these dogs when owners have them out in yards. Throwing rocks at them, jumping at them, etc...after a while wouldn't you want to just make someone leave you alone too. I'm not saying that these dogs are right for what they do..and yes if any dog attacks a person it should be put down. If my dogs so much as snipped or growled at my kids then I would put him down..but I would do the same if it were a chihuahua...Just something to think about.

I agree with a lot of people here. And NO they shouldn't be put down. I see where your coming from though. But if somebody that has a child and goes to get a Pit Bull, they should know what they're getting into. Some of the stories you hear - don't really tell you the whole story, I do believe in some cases that if a Pit attacks somebody that it has to be put down. But I don't believe that every one should be killed just because some attacked. That's like saying - All "Middle Easterners" should be killed because one or two countries attacked America, or they look all the same to most of us.

your fuc ing stupid i think you should be put to sleep you dumb as s. pit bulls are some of the most affectionate dogs you can bring into a family. i want you to find a story about a well raised family pit bull that killed a family member unprovoked. the real story's you will find start with someone breaking in, an "intruder" like a mail man in which case the dog sees its attack as protecting its family, or kids taunting and throwing rocks at the dog. Jack Russel terriers have a greater attack rate (feel free to look it up and prove me wrong I'm sure you wont because you cite no examples in your question) the only reason pit bulls are demonized so much is that when they do attack they have more power and force then most other dogs. this makes the likely hood of someone being killed or maimed. i have a few friends with well tempered easygoing happy go lucky pure bread pit bulls who think there lap dogs

I don't think so at all. Any dog has the potential to flip out. Not just pit bulls. And, I would love to know where you heard "hundreds" of stories of pits killing babies. I don't know where you're reading it, its horrible. It's just that sort of information that makes people hate and fear the breed.

NO WAY PITBULLS ARE REALLY SWEET DOGS! THE ONLY ONES THAT SHOULD BE PUT TO SLEEP AND BE MADE ILLEGAL ARE THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE THEM VICIOUS BECAUSE THEY ARE NATURALLY SWEET DOGS! I HAVE A PIT MIX! MY AUNT HAS A PIT MIX! AND SHE HAD A FULL PIT WHO WAS THE SWEETEST DOG UNTIL SHE DIED AT THE AGE OF 17!
GO TO THIS WEBSITE AND YOU WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND AND YOU WILL NEVER QUESTION PIT BULLS AGAIN!

ARE YOU SERIOUS! No animal should be put to sleep. Its just some people don't take good care of there dogs and there dogs go out and fight. If they would take the time to train there dogs, they would be just like anyother dog. Don't just blame it on the pitbulls!
