Often people who are only into conversation will use this technique to get your attention or to get their message across. Sometimes without even realizing they are doing this.
In business it is sometimes know as a lighter version of the
"canned sales routine" It's been used for years by salesmen and is meant to get your attention and to emphasize that they can be trusted. Car salesmen will call you Mr Jones(example) over and over as it's meant to show you you are respected when they screw you over:) After the first meetings or so they will revert to a first name personal approach. Insurance salesmen will call you by your first name as soon as they learn it to make you feel like they have known you for years. If you have ever had a life insurance salesman trying for a sale notice he will (women are lots more subtle) come up with (example) now bob this plan, you know bob this is your greatest etc. and it sounds like a rehearsal and it is. It';s like they have a can full of questions and answers which they do . For every positive they have a smile and a nod for your understanding, For every negative reaction from you they have the opposite a reason you should be moved into buying their product. A serious salesperson with a good product can use the can sales approach(most tele-opps do just that) to makes fantastic salaries annually.

Depends on the conversation.
Most customer service people are required to say your name at least 3 times during the call/conversation. It's supposed to make you feel special and that your call is personal and important.
If it's someone who doesnt know me well or we have just met, they may be repeating my name to make sure they remember it.
My friends and I can have entire conversations lasting for long periods without ever using each others name.
Unless you are at a party and trying to get someones attention.

I think that once in a conversation, if someone says my name, it's good because it shows that they are talking to ME and they mean what they say more. I try to look people in the eye and say their names once during conversation, to show that I am serious that I am paying attention to them. However, if someone started saying my name a bunch of times in conversation, then yeah, that'd be kinda weird.

It may feel weird but I have heard that a good way to remember a person's name is to use it as often as one can. So don't take it personally, some of us really do have problems remembering names.

They say when you meet someone new you should say their name three times in conversations so you will remember it but yes it is creepy when someone keeps repeating your name all the time, sounds like your dad having a go at you :)

It makes me feel good when it's not really really frequent. Then it's just creepy. It's how people try to connect with you because you feel important when they use your name and it helps keep your attention because you're trained to snap to attention when you hear your name.

Yeah its like you are in a movie when they keep repeating each others name ....I understand that it can get annoying almost like they are being condescending in a way.

When someone does that - they are trying to make a connection with you, keep your attention, and memorize your name.
