It is a sin to use profanity, vulgarity, and degrading words. The tongue is the most unruley member of our body. We are quick to criticize, lie, blaspheme, and generally say not nice things to one another. Because our mouths spew such sin, the Lord offers us the gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues (a heavenly language and an experience that human words cannot express). If you think about it, God gives us a beautiful gift to use with our sometimes ugly mouth.

(Insert long string of profanity here)
As a former US Army Drill Instructor for the 104th Training Regiment at Ft Lewis, Washington State we used to have competition on how insulting you can be WITHOUT the use of swear words.
Unfortunatly, I was pretty good at it, as far as creativity.
Then I started taking my relationship with Christ a lot more seriously and became schtzophrenic- Army Training vs Christian belief.
YES IT IS WRONG TO USE FOUL LANGUAGE- the Apostle Paul was very clear on this on several occations. Of course, he was an Attorney so he would be the expert on this.
Theres on example of where Peter gets angry and starts swearing at Jesus- Now, you're standing before God and you start swearing at him. What can you say?
JESUS CHRIST!
What? I'm right here Peter,,,,,?
I actually pointed this out to a Lutheran Preacher a few weeks ago and he thought it was funny- but with serious overtones. How would one swear to Jesus's face?
I am thinking- I have little, if any proof for this- but it does fit William of Occams "Razor" that Jesus probably would look at Peter like a 2 year old having a temper tantrum.
Ever watched a 2 year old and not begin to giggle at them? Then watch them get even MORE angry?
What sucks is now I'm the same age as Pete, and I still have temper tantrums just like he did :|

The Bible is clear on the matter of our choice of words. The commandments tell us to not take the Lord's name in vain. in other places the Bible tells us that we will be judged by the words that come out of our mouths. Each person will have to make an account of how they spent their lives and the words they say are included.

You cannot take God's name in vain. Men do that every day with cussing. The words that come out don't mean a thing. It's the question. God judges your soul, not your body. You can say anything you like. It might no please God, but to use cuss words will not make him smite you either. . Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

Yes although I am a muslim,in our holy book Al Qur'an and Hadith we are not allowed to speak a dirty language. We can not talk about other people short comings and we do not allow to talk
the bad news or mistakes of others. We should protect. and keep secretely the shame of others. We could not discuss the others' wrong doings. But we can advice him/her directly, not witnessed by others. We can not call some short comings of others such as his/her blind eyes or deaf ears and dump or his/her crippled legs, because he/she is a creation of our God. Your dirty language
will hurt them much. We should love each other by protecting oyhers' wrong doings and shortcomings. We must appreciate all of our God's creations
.According to our islamic teaching we will get sins if we talk a dirty or filthy language. We should ask for God's forgiveness.

Within these answers are many biblical quotes, so I will not deal with that. For me as a Christian, it is a sin for me not to walk in love. It is not loving if we cuss someone, belittling them, hurting their spirits, minds and souls. Words have power, and they affect those who hear them. As for Profanity, Profanity is commonly taken as ,"Taking The Name of the Lord God in Vain." That God tells us not to do it is not pleasing to Him. I choose to please God, because I love and Respect, and am in awe of Him. So as a Christian, I choose not to use profane words.(Or at least try not to, I am still a work in progress, and at times I will let slip, then I choose better next time, after asking for forgiveness.)

Eph 5:3 Since you are God's people, it is not right that any matters of sexual immorality or indecency or greed should even be mentioned among you.
Eph 5:4 Nor is it fitting for you to use language which is obscene, profane, or vulgar. Rather you should give thanks to God.
Eph 5:5 You may be sure that no one who is immoral, indecent, or greedy (for greed is a form of idolatry) will ever receive a share in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.
Happy to help. Remember to thank God for knowledge.
