Ok I have to give some background on this question its not about wife beating.
I’m in china and was held prisoner by a knife wielding ex-girl friend in my flat for over an hour and refused to let me leave nor was I able to call the police. In the end fearing my safety I (and hers as she had started cutting herself with it) I had to disarm her and throw her to the floor to escape from the place.

In the case of your life (not to mention hers) I think you did the right thing. At no point in a relationship is it OK to THREATEN any ones life. If the relationship is not working out for one reason or the other than you know its time to bail. Dint get yourself into trouble for threaten to take someones life or yours.
I hope you called the cops and a shrink on that crazy B!*%#

You did the right thing- there shouldn't be a moral or ethical issue here. Your life was endangered, you did what you could to stop the situation from esclating.
In the United States, you would be a hero
In the United Kingdom, aka British Rule, they'd arrest you!

If you were my brother I would say "you should have knocked her out" - no woman should think they can attack a man and walk away unscathed. I don't believe in men hitting women, but I sure as heck believe a man has the right to defend himself no matter what sex the attacker is.

She was threatening your life, so it was acceptable to fight her. Fight women in the same scenarios that you would men, but be careful because of some bias towards you in that scenario. I am not encouraging fighting, but simply saying that it might be the best solution against either gender if you are theatened like that.

If a woman attacks you have the right to defend your self. If she pulled a knife on you that is grounds for you doing anything you had to do to protect your self.
It is not something to take pride in, but it is a necessary evil. You owe it to your self to protect your body from physical harm. You would have been with in your rights if you had to kill her if she would not stop.

whenever that woman is not being a lady. personally, I take any act of violence towards me as a threat to my life, and take action to get rid of the threat by any means necessary - woman or not, however, a lady would never do such a thing.

Sounds perfectly acceptable.
I'm against fighting altogether, but if a woman starts to hit, I think it is appropriate to hit back.
