Any religion. Is there a penalty, or does your religious community just let them go? What if they want to return, do you accept them back?

In my church a person can be disciplined or disfellowshiped if they actively support postions against the church. They have the right to a hearing with someone in authority to represent them. If they repent they can restored depending upon the nature of the offense. If they lose their membership, they must be rebaptised.

Well. First we need to define what apostate means.
First let’s define "apostate." This word means "defection." So a Christian or church that is living in apostasy is basically one that has defected from or deserted Christ and what they believe. So basically they are "dead" spiritually, as the church in Sardis (Revelation 3:1-6).

An apostate would be one that no longer believes in a living God and His power to bring salvation and hope into the lives of others. So not only has this one lost hope for themselves, but for the world around them as well.

I think If I were to be in a chruch this person would be shunned. Or welcome but not spoken to for the reason that this person would be concidered bad association.

I try to treat all people the same way. The second there is a big booming voice from the sky saying "Only those who follow this path are worthy of compassion and respect", then people get form me what they give to others.

"The platinum rule: Do unto others as THEY do unto others."

Live and let live.

Of course, if they break any oaths in the process, they aren't trustworthy. And if they aren't trustworthy, they will most likely never be welcomed back into the circle.
