You can request the oath issuer (for lack of a better term) to remove it from the statement.

What sort of oath are you taking? Some do not require the "higher power" clause any more. Others talk about penalty of perjury - can't get around that one. For oral, if you are testifying, talk to the judge first, before you have to testify, and they'll eliminate the God clause. You'll say your oath from your raised right hand without involving any deity of any sort. Of course, some states are sort of backward, or their laws are. You should check. But it really depends on what you are swearing to.

EDIT: As for believing or not believing in "God" or "god," some people of certain faiths do not seem to understand that there are many ways to be spiritual which do not involve their "God." If you are Taoist or Muslim or Hindi, your deity is different than God, so saying "God" would be an incorrect statement as part of an oath.

You could explain before the oath is started, that you do not feel comfortable stating the words. Maybe, they can eliminate that phrase for you. If you are in a group of people, you can just not state that part. Since everyone else will be, no one will notice that you did not. Or you can mouth the words, without saying them. You can cough at the appropriate moment, or something similar.
Hope this helps!

An oath is when you swear to god, and affirmation is a promise to other then god, so that is what you would do.

ask before you take your oath otherwise you could be considered invalid.

In most cases today, the oath is just cermonial. Regardless you will still be held to the standard and norm.

Wats wrong with saying "under God"<----see? u need 2 capitalize the 'G'.
anyways, God shouldnt be someone you want to avoid (or be ashamed of saying...unless you dont beleive in Him. that's not so good). so even if i do have advice on how to, i wouldnt give it to u or anyone else for that matter.
have a nice evening

Just don't say that part if you don't want to. Students are allowed to skip it in school, if they want to.

Freedom of religion, or lack thereof.
