Why do we have to pay taxes when our kids can't even goto the public school ....?
How is that we have to pay taxes for the public school system? The public school system in our county, as it probably is in many states, is so over run with gangs and violence. I don't feel safe sending my kids there. Therefore I have to send them to private school where the classes are smaller and no reported violence in this particular school. How can we get our schools back from the dope dealers and gangs?

Maybe I should have stated this before but I live in a very rural area. Basically there are only 4 public schools within a 60 mile radius. All are bad. Even the pre-k. Last year, a 5 year old boy was found in the playyard holding little girl down with both of there pants down and him trying to have sex. That comes from upbringing. I agree that is not the school. That is the parents

Because the reason that our government created public schools and guidelines to how long a child must attend is to create educated voters that can function in our society and so the entire society must fund the program.

Not all public schools are overrun with violence, I go to a public school that is considered to be one of the best in the state of Michigan, both academically and for lack of violence/gangs. And what about the people that can't afford to send their kids to private schools, are those kids supposed to just not have a chance and end up on the streets creating the violence that you speak against?

Imagine how much worse it would be without your taxes funding it. Let's throw all of the poor kids into a school and whoever comes out of it unscathed wins? If you don't like your district, move or work for the betterment of it. Write some research grants, get some funds going for remediation or, like I said, move.. I moved to give my kids better schools. Yes, it doesn't seem like people should have to but your kids come first to you. Do what it takes whether it's working within the system or without but don't complain about your tax dollars being spent on bad schools unless YOU want to help change them.

I agree. I understand that everyone needs to pay for schools, however, I wish that our tax money went to the schools are kids , grandkids etc attend. People think private schools are filled with rich kids and are offered the best. The school my children attend is proof that is untrue. Most families go w/ out many things to send their children there. The school itself needs so much work and the only way to afford it is for parental volunteers to do the job.
It is a shame that if you want the freedom to pray..or just plain be safe in a school..you have to pay for it!!

Be careful about blanket statements. Public schools in the entire country are not like the situation that you are describing. As a tax payer you have a right to complain about the situations that you perceive in your community but you and your friends who share your feelings need to get on the backs of the local officials to straighten things out. Work together to get local laws inacted to get some psych help for the kids who are sexual at early ages. Get codes of behavior passed and enforced and get angry at the police who don't want to do there jobs. Call or email your local news station in order to make the rest of your community aware of how their hard earned bucks are being thrown away.

I'm sure there are other public schools around your area. However, I certainly agree with what you are saying. I tried to get into a private school because my public school is encountering the same problem. You should file a complaint at the district or take it to the city hall. I will support you.

I work at an inner city public school, have been for 9 years. I have come to the conclusion that you'll never be able to fix it because the problem is not the system, the teachers or even the students. ITS THE PARENTS!! There is no accountability at all. If a kid doesn't want to go to school one day, it doesn't matter if you call the parents, because the parents dont care. Thats the problem.

Check into Charter Schools. They use tax dollars just like regular public schools.

I ABSOLUTELY ABHOR our Public School System here. That is why our 3 children attend Charter Schools.

This is a process called "selective population control". OK maybe that is just what I call it.
It's a way for the US gov. to control who has more opportunities and who doesn't , who can "afford" to live a safe and healthy life.
My best advice to you is... move. Find a community that is more to your liking. Because sadly the inner city public school crisis is just gonna get worse.

this would be a good issue to write your congressman about. maybe the public should get organized and start lobbying to change tax laws for people who have children in private schools that way your money would be spent on their private schooling

why do childless people have to pay for schools? why do old people have to pay for schools?

so we can have schools.

personally, we unschool so our children don't have to endure schools, but the schools aren't dangerous because they're publicly funded - they're dangerous because so many parents have totally copped out on parenting - starting wtih day care in infancy. kids aren't being raised by anyone and are utterly messed up.
