like if they keep telling you that you are so good at a thing and that you should do that for a living. and they keep pushing and pushing you until you have no interest to do that as a career?

just wondering cuz i always wanted to be a chef until i worked at a resturant and my mother only agreeing with that for my major...now its homeland security and she doesn't like it

You need to do what makes you happy, not what makes your mother happy. My mother pushed me to go to college. I'm 22, and I still haven't pursued a formal degree program. Of course, I'm no failure, but I certainly didn't go with my mom's plan for my life!
I think that if pushed, most people's instincts are to rebel.
I love animals. Everyone tells me I should become a veterinarian. But animals are a hobby for me; I would have lost my hobby if I had chosen to pursue it as a career.
You might be very good at cooking. But if you did it every day for a living, you might become very bored with it. And then you would be stuck in a career you don't enjoy, plus, you will have lost a hobby which you did enjoy.
Hope this helps!

This should be your choicew, not your mothers. Now if she is pating for school she may want to voice an opinion. I have told my son I will pay for two years of school and after that he is on his own. So either he needs to get a trade (like being a chef) or take his undergrad classes to cover any major for a four year degree.

And remember if you going to go into government ie. Homeland security or FBI know the requirements.

I think your mom is just showing you that there are other careers you'd be fantastic in. Maybe she knows it'll be a richer life for you and make it easier. Some pay better than others. Listen to your Mom........she knows best. Maybe she's a bit afraid of your new choice in the homeland security.......alot going on now these days. Give your mom some credit, I bet she's a smart woman

Is your mother going to work this job for the rest of her life or you? Parents can be VERY influencial. They are not always right.

Making your own decision is a big part of growing up. So is saying, "Look Mom, I really can't stand that, I want to do this instead."

Good luck with that! It's a big step and not always a smoothe one, but you'll be MUCH better off for it.

My parents both had medical careers (my dad was a pharmacist and my mom was a nurse). After hearing enough of their horror stories, I wouldn't touch a medical career with a 10 foot pole. I eventually went into marketing.

well, parents want you happy, so they usually say things to push you towards your goal, parents just want you to be happy with what your with. if your mother isn't happy with you are doing now, it's probably because she tried her best to help you become a chef, but it turned out in another result

Not to sound cliche or anything .. but you need to do what makes you happy regardless of what anyone else pushes you to do. There are far too many people that come home every day hating their job.

In the end children want to make their parents proud. This is why parents have much influence on what majors children choose.

a parent can make you do anything
however if they pay the bills and the college
they do have some say in it
ultimately you cna ignore them and do it your way, though you'll have to come up with the money somehow if parents pull the financial rug from underneath you

You should always choose the path you like. After all, parents are there just to guide you, but the final answer depends on YOU. It's your life, and you only get one, so make it worthwhile.
