You need only 3-4 ounces - about the size of a deck of cards. But it doesn't have to be meat (or poultry or fish) - it can be eggs, cheese, and certain combinations of vegetables (like corn and beans). One supplies the amino acids the other is missing, to make a complete protein.
All of your body's cells need protein to function and replenish themselves. Most Americans eat far more than they need, however.

And protein deficiencies aren't to big of a problem here in the developed world but in some of the developing countries children suffer from 1) Kwashiorkor: The big round belly kids caused by a enlarged liver or 2) Marasmus: The super skinny kids that have no fat whatsoever. Those are the main two that I'm aware of but in general it is VERY hard to become protein deficient if you if you are eating a few good meals.

Look on the nutrition facts. it gives you a percentage of how much you need. without enough protein your muscles don't get strong, and you don't have much energy to do things
