An ice pack on the outside of the throat helps take the swelling out. It's kind of a strange position to lay in but it does help. Drinking ice cold water helps. Have you tried losenges? I really like the Sucrets. They really numb your throat. Honey is great for coating your throat. Just take a spoonful of it and swallow. Make sure you keep your throat moist too buy drinking. If it starts to get dry that will make it worse. Good luck I hope some of this helps and you feel better soon.

Make a tea using ordinary cooking sage - about 1/2 teaspoon ground herb (or 1 teaspoon of chopped herb) per cup of water. Steep 5 minutes in just boiled water; strain through a fine paper filter and discard the herb. Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar) and 1 teaspoon of salt. Use this tea as a GARGLE. It will kill the pain and lots and lots of the bad germs you're incubating in your throat.

Coffee with non-dairy creamer.
There's something in that creamer powder that coats my throat. That's actually how I got started drinking coffee; once during a sore throat I tried it and found it worked better than cough drops, lemon, honey and other things. That tea didn't do me any good either, although one, "Throat Coat" came close. Too many of them remove your own mucous, making the throat more sore.
Something in that creamer powder does it for me; not half-n-hlaf, not milk, but the powder.

I take elder berry tea. With a little honey and lemon. I try to drink it while it is warm. They say a cup a day keeps colds away! I agree havent had a cold since I started drinking it. I buy Alvita elder berry tea. I actually drink it with out the honey or lemon. I like it.

I like the numbing throat spray they sell by the cough syrup. It numbs your throat faster than the drops and many of them you can use every 1-2 hours. Just don't eat or drink anything right afterwards.

Mix honey with some lemon juice until you have a syrup and slowly lick it off a spoon. I generally start with at least a tablespoon of honey and mix in lemon juice a few drops at a time. It really helps.
