We thought of you with love today,
But that is nothing new.

We thought about you yesterday,
And days before that, too.

We think of you in silence.
We often speak your name.

Now all we have are memories,
And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake
With which we'll never part.

God has you in His keeping.
We have you in our heart.

The Thought OF You
The only way I can hold you . . . is to hold you in my thoughts . . .
So I hold you . . . in my thoughts.

Like the truck lights going down the road in the distance till
You cannot see them anymore.

Like dark gray billows of smoke climbing, climbing in the sky. . .
And you know that something has been destroyed that may never be there again.

Like the old cat that went away into the woods and sometimes
If I waited and waited and waited long and long
He would come back . . . but then he did not come back . . .
And he was gone.

And life has to begin again without you.

Goodbye . . .I hate goodbye . . . my soul will never say goodbye.

Only hope . . .in the dark and never give up . . .until there is no reason to hope anymore.

And the sadness wells up inside like a river . .
Never empty . . .sometimes filling up . . .it overflows in tears . . .
and then flows silently on.

Waiting . . .never still . . .holding . . .the thought of you.
The only way I can hold you . . .is to hold you in my thoughts.

My dad shared a version of this poem at my uncle's funeral and I love it:

Then one day he boards a ship,
As he sets out to sea;
The ship spreads her sails and sniffs the breeze
And slips away from me.

I watch his fading image shrink,
As he moves on and on,
Until at last he’s but a speck,
Then someone says, “He’s gone.”

Gone where? Gone only from our sight
And from our farewell cries;
That ship will somewhere reappear
To other eager eyes.

Beyond the dim horizon’s rim
Resound the welcome drums,
And while we’re crying, “There he goes!”
They’re shouting, “Here he comes!”

A Native American Prayer
-
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep
-
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow
-
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain
-
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I did not Die.

Each Life That Touches Ours for Good
Karen Lynn Davidson

Each life that touches ours for good
Reflects thine own great mercy, Lord;
Thou sendest blessings from above
Thru words and deeds of those who love.

What greater gift dost thou bestow,
What greater goodness can we know
Than Christ-like friends, whose gentle ways
Strengthen our faith, enrich our days.

When such a friend from us departs,
We hold forever in our hearts
A sweet and hallowed memory,
Bringing us nearer, Lord, to thee.

For worthy friends whose lives proclaim
Devotion to the Savior's name,
Who bless our days with peace and love,
We praise thy goodness, Lord above.
