It's because it's hard to accept something that has no proof. It's not because they don't teach evolution in school. There is too much evidence against evolution to believe in it. Science itself refutes Darwinian evolution. Darwinian evolution is still only a theory, it has never been proven, and thanks to modern science it is now being disproven. It takes far more faith to believe in Darwinian evolution than it does to believe in creation and intelligent design. There is a lot more evidence for creation and intelligent design than there is for Darwinian evolution. A lot of people believe in the theory of Darwinian evolution because they were (and are still being) taught this theory in school. This theory should no longer be taught in school now that modern science is continueously finding more evidence against it. At the time Darwin came up with the theory of evolution, science was not able to disprove it. Darwin's theory of evolution has not been proven. Only 9% of the population now believes in Darwinian evolution.
Scientific evidence casts serious doubts on the theory of evolution, for example:
*Perry Marshall vs. 30+ Skeptics:
From August 2005 to July 2006, he has successfully defended the Information Theory argument for Intelligent Design on Infidels, the world’s largest atheist discussion board.

america was settled by the people most persecuted and abused by the tyrannies of europe - they came to america in the hope of freedom of religion and freedom from tyranny
hence higher than average percentage of religious extremists/ fanatics/ narrowminded/ bigots and lower IQs - the brains use their brains to steal more money and power - a fool and his money are soon parted - never give a sucker an even break - also america was an escape for rogues - many of the poor were driven to crime - and families tended to export their troublemakers
also the pioneering needs of america did not work well towards the encouragement of study and reading - people who came, tended to be people who expected they would have to work hard carving out a life, ie, doers, not thinkers - and even when thinkers came, the need to carve out a life put learning on a back shelf - plus needs of economy meant that people may have brought no other books than the bible, if that - the thinkers would tend to stay in europe where there were institutions to shelter them
america gets 85% of the nobel prizes, though - but this may be because of buying brains from other countries
there are those who believe in believing without evidence, and those who believe in sanity: believing anything only with good reason, and then with caution and keeping an open mind for further evidence for and against
there are those who say, in pride: my belief, [right or wrong], and those who say, sanely, modestly: the truth, whether my idea or others' ideas
obviously it is ego, pride, selfdestruction, insanity, aka satan, that drives the insane attitude
selfpreservation and happiness are totally dependent on realism, so ego is selfdestruction
[satan, ims [=if memory serves], means destruction, uselessness]
bigoted people use god as a stamp of approval : instead of saying: i am right, they say: god is right [and god thinks what i think]
since god, like brer rabbit, he dont say nuttin, this is a very efficient trick to fool congregations - using the congregation's respect for god to manipulate them, and also make the preacher look humble and deferential to god when he is worshipping his ego - and the bible, as history shows, can be used to defend almost every opinion
part of false religion [ie, the religion most people think of when they think of religion, the kind of religion that is practised almost everywhere] - a large part of false religion - is regression to infantilism: childish mindless obedience, immaturity and irresponsibility -- following the letter of the law
whereas true religion [the kind never seen in public or institutionalised religion] is maturity, realism, responsibility - following the spirit of the law, which sometimes means breaking the letter of the law - ie, thinking for oneself, becoming one's own father, internalising conscience, using one's own sense of what is good [ie, tends to greater happiness] -
as jacob did - commited a fraud in defense of the spirit - and wrestled with god - ie, not pretending to believe what he didnt
and as, one can argue, mary did, in getting pregnant by a man when engaged to another - she followed her spiritual conscience not the social rules - [angels dont look different from men, as is clear from the angels who came to sodom, and from when god appeared to abraham as three men and abraham didnt immediately recongise god]
and as jesus so obviously did, in breaking the rules [not stoning adulteresses, picking grain on sunday, etc]
[there is this false meaning of good in religion, as obeying the rules - whatever the rules are, without thinking who made the rules, what the meaning of the rules is, what the rules mean and dont mean, whether the rule is outdated by social change, etc - not thinking, which is brainsuicide, which is destruction - churches demand you leave your opinions at the door, ie they demand mental suicide, they promote infantilism - for their own ends - makes the crowd easier to milk]
as augustine says, the law is a raft to get you across the river - you dont carry it around with you when you get to the other side, ie when you internalise conscience and do your best to maximise your happiness with your own sense - understanding that there is no mistake you can make that is going to turn god against you - that mistakes are like a child learning to walk falling down
like staking a tree when it is just replanted, only until it can support itself - obedience for little children, who havent got the info to understand, removing the stake of the law as the child grows in maturity
hell is just what you suffer if you dont pursue your happiness with sincerity and dedication - falling into ditches more often if you dont try hard to see where you are going
