Time.
Want an answer from a geneticist in layman's terms?
When you drink alchohol, your stomach sends a message to your cells that more liquid is on the way. The cell wall has a special pressure called "turgor". When it receives the message that liquid is on the way, it must reduce turgor, or pressure, and releases liquid from inside the cell, which results in having to pee a lot, even if the beverage has not been processed by the intestines.
The more you drink, the more cell fluid is released. And since alchohol is processed differently than a regular glass of water (it is absorbed directly by the stomach lining, and then is evaporated into and through the lungs, skin, and slowly processed by the liver), your body has released more "turgor", or liquid than you really have taken in. Your stomach fooled your body.
So now you are dehydrated, which causes your body to immediately draw water from it's best source- plasma and blood cells. So your blood thickens a bit, which causes an increase in heart rate, causing a headache. The solution? Most take an aspirin or two before bed (I have found BC powder to be the best) before retiring for the evening. Aspirin thins the blood. And yes, a large glass of water by the bedside helps.
What helps more? Slow down alchohol consumption by mixing drinks with juice or water (soda can just as easily dehydrate you), add food in between to aid your stomach in decreasing alchohol absorption (all though this is controversial), and best of all, know your limits.
"The hair of the dog" will only dehydrate you more.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, you're asking how the consumption of alcohol cures a hangover from drinking alcohol. If that is correct, it's along the lines of the old saying, often used by alcoholics, or people very used to hangovers: " Some of the hair of the dog that bit you". I'm not sure of the exact chemical processes involved in a "cure" like that, but it's similar to how people addicted to coffee get a very bad headache when they suddenly don't have coffee one morning. The ONLY quick cure is some more coffee. I know. "Been there, done that!" Not with alcohol, but with coffee. Both chemicals respond with that old cure "Some of the hair of the dog that bit you", but it's not a "cure", just a way to slowly get your "equilibrium" with respect to those chemicals and initiate a long range "cure". God Bless you.

the best cure for a hang over is more alcohol.....seriously...if you drink a little bit in the morning (nothing very strong though), you will feel better because a hang over is really your body going through alcohol withdrawl. thats why alot of people drink bloody marys for brunch.
contrary to popular belief, bread, coffee and a cold shower will NOT cure a hangover.
however, to prevent one, try drinking water before you go to bed or at least keep a water bottle by your bed so if you wake up early, the first thing you can do is drink water.

You do not "cure" a hangover. You endure it until your body gets rid of the toxins created from drinking too much alcohol. Your liver will remove the alcohol at a pretty constant rate and nothing will speed that level up. I have owed my liver an apology on several occasions for making it work so hard. As I get older, the highs are not as high and the lows are lower. I don't drink like I used to (the dry heaves are a young man's game).
I found that after the requisite barfing and hurling, that cottage cheese helps settle my stomach somewhat. This was after the fourth round of dry heaves. You know you feel better after you throw up, but it is only temporary. For me, it took four rounds of being sick. After the fourth time, I could start to put something light on my stomach.
Wait for at least an hour after eating cottage cheese to start drinking again. The alcohol will curdle your stomach and you will ralph again.

drink lots and lots and lots of water. If you can't hold the water down, eat ice chips. a hangover is basically your body being dehydrated. hydrate, and you will feel so much better. your best bet is to dring lots of water before you go to sleep, then if you need to be semi functioning the next moring, set your alarm for an hour before you need to wake up, drink another glass or two of water, and take 2 asprin. go to sleep, then when you get up you will feel more alert and ready for the day. Although your best cure is prevention. dont drink that much. if you space out the alcohaulic drinks with other drinks, you can keep a nice fun buzz the whole evening without overdoing it.

I drink a BIG glass of water before I go to bed and take a few ibuprofen. I haven't had a hangover in years. This method has always worked for me.

Drug called Chaser available at most drug stores if you are over 21. They are pills that contain activated charcoal among other things, and are supposed to absorb the chemicals that create a hang over. They will not prevend you from getting drunk.

I agree with tsopolly. and DONT eat bread, thats a myth, if it does anything, it just holds the alcohol in your system longer, prolonging the hangover. Drink plenty of water before you pass out!
