You don't need toiletries because the Duane Reades, CVS and other pharmacies abound. Never buy in your hotel nor at small sandwich/snack/cigarette stores we call bodegas; prices for toothpaste are always higher.
Do not wear a hiking back pack. Only college students who are not from NY use them; everyone else stands out like a sore thumb. If you need to bring a backpack for shopping, get a monochromatic dark (black) one. You'll find, though, that other than a souvenir tee-shirt, if you're purchasing clothing, you'll have to carry around the store's shopping bag. Ask the store to "double it up" and you'll be able to load it with other small purchases. Then you'll look like a NY-ker.
Black. Wear black slacks and a lightweight jacket for going to nice places in the evening. You're not dressing for a wedding, but more to avoid looking like you're going to a baseball game. One is supposed to dress for the theatre; it's really tacky to wear jeans shorts to a Broadway show. Some restaurants are jacket and tie for men (you'll find out when you make reservations).
Sunscreen -- but you can get that when you get here.
Prescription drugs, and copies of your prescriptions and eyeglasses.
See if your hotel has a hair dryer and iron.
Actually, all I guess all you need is nice clothes for the evening, comfortable walking shoes for the day, an empty carryon bag for souvenirs and other purchases, a couple of credit cards (some place take either Amex, MC or Visa, and not all at the same time) and petty cash for taxis and street purchases.
Remember, New York has more than you need and everything you didn't know you needed!

One nice outfit for nice dinners or shows... nothing TOO fancy, but nice.
Comfortable shoes, you'll seriously HATE yourself if you do not have comfortable shoes... no HIGH HEELS!
Leave your expensive Jewelery at home, you don't want to attract too much attention to yourself.
That's about all that you NEED. I wouldn't wear any ugly grungy clothing, like big ugly shorts and t-shirts, because only tourists wear those and they stick out to us... I seriously don't think any NYers wear shorts. Pants or skirts are the way to go.

Unless you are going any where formal, you can get by on very little. Remember there are stores in NYC too.
