In 3 1/2 years of combat/security operations in Iraq, around 2400 US troops have been killed. That averages out to, let's see, get out the Windows calculator, about 686 per year, about 2 per day from all branches. A rough average of the number of troops that have been there is about 750,000. That comes to about a 0.0032% fatality rate. That's phenomenally low. Divided amongst the different branches, the number becomes even smaller. More people are killed in California in one year than the number of US troops in Iraq in almost four.

So the odds are you have a damn good chance of coming out alive, and unscathed. If you are a good Marine and watch your fellow Marines' backs, you'll do just fine. Go infantry and Semper Fi.

SGT B is right. You plan on coming out alive. People that don't know anything like to talk about Marines being cannon fodder but I'm here to tell you I'm alive today because of Marine Corps training.

This Glen guy has got some serious issues...he has nothing of value to add to the discussion.

I think you are going about this the wrong way. When we join death isnt the main thing that is running through our head. Actually most of the time we are thinking how are we going to keep the guys around us alive.

If you go into the military and go to the middle east and this is all you are thinking of you are going to end up by doing something stupid and there will be a greater chance that you can come home in a coffin.

Do what you want but think about why your doing it. Its not a matter of dying its the fact that you are standing up for what you believe in and you willing to fight for it..

Well that has nothing to do with it when your number is up its up.On the other hand how many Marines stay alive more because of their training ? And because of who watches your back I'd definitely want a Marine watching mine.

One is too many. But you could die doing just about anything else so why let this stop you.
PS. If you do join, take a few friends & pay Glen a visit.

Seriously, more Marines are killed every year in training accidents than in combat.
