Enjoy your dogs!

I think they are grand and wonderful dogs.
I used to compete and steward in dog shows and the pitbulls were just about the sweetest and best behaved dogs on the grounds (okay, sighthounds and others too). Often it would be the smallest dogs in other breeds which were disruptive. (but to many people, a snarky small dog is just cute)

Of course, not all dog breeding and placements are done in a responsible manner, and this is major part of the problem Pitbulls.

I have a few favorite breeds.
Many times I have felt that the well bred Pitbull is the King of Dogs in his own way. He deserves a lot more respect than he gets. ...and I feel that it is this lack of respect that makes up a major part of the BSL problem. :(

I fostered one for a few months when I found it abandoned ON CHRISTMAS this past year. She was only 5 months old and was a mess. She had mange super bad. We had her treated and fixed and found her a good home. Having her for two months she was a delight. She did not want to leave our side, sat with us on the couch and followed us if we left the room. She was full of energy. An owner of a "smilin pitbull rescue site" (which we used to locate an owner for her ) said they can be dog aggresive and to never leave a pitbull alone with any dog no matter what because they will fight to the death b/c it is in their breed. He has had many and places some in homes so I guess heknows what he is talkinga bout but maybe it depends on how the dogs raised. The puppys new owner had a pitbull for 13 years and it was great with her other dog. I have heard horror stories about them but at the same time the ones I have known have been wonderful. Depends on how they are raised and socailized and if they had any previous owners. BUT I must say people are crazy. I had at least three offers to "pay for her and have her shipped to them and they would have a good home for her" and the whole email was very odd and I knew they wanted her for dog fighting and it was disturbing. People like that is what gave these animals a bad rap in the first place. Through you in a cage with someone who is going to kill you and see what you do.

Pitbulls are not a a natural breed- but Combination boxer and Rottweiler and other aggressive breeds. Bred for only one thing-to fight other dogs. Back then those who indulged in the horrible and cruel sport(not a sport but savagery) wanted a superior fighting dog-why when a pit bull bites down his jaw clamps shut and he will not release. That is the danger of pit bulls-one never knows if.when the very very aggressive traits in their genes will come to the surface and why a pit bull that's been a family pet for years will all of a sudden, with no warning or provocation attack its owner. Often they also attack-when the aggressive nature surfaces-children - for children are the approx.size of prey. Not all pit bulls attack and some are good loyal family pets all their life BUT it is the breed with the most unprovoked dog attacks than any other breed. It unfortunately ,because the parentage are the most powerful and aggressive dog breeds, not a matter of how you raise them-for a lot of the ones that turn are raised lovingly-its already there in the genes and animals are driven by instinct so its unpredictable. Sad that Greed motivated the pit bull being made in the first place

I think pitbulls, if trained properly, can be great dogs without being aggressive. My daughter grew up in a backyard full of pitbulls (mother and puppies). Every day after school she went to a friend's house to wait till I could go pick her up after my work hours. They had a housefull of pitbulls and these dogs played in the pool and with all the kids that were always there. They were all socialized early and were part of the family. We never had any accidents or even close to it and believe me, sometimes there were more kids over there than you can imagine and of all ages because this family had boys and girls from grade school age to high school......and one of my neighbors has one that is the sweetest dog ever! She plays with her other playmate, a chihuahua, and they get along great, she even allows the stray cat to run in the house and play with her. But just like ANY responsible dog owner, you ALWAYS have to have a watchful eye.....ANY dog is able to bite someone given the right moment. Make sure people do not approach it first....let the dog sniff out people first.

Friendly Hello,

There is truly no way to describe the reputation pit bulls have. It is very sad that the pit bull is getting the bad reputation that they have. Many times a dog becomes aggressive because the owner teaches it aggression. So is there really a bad pit or just a bad owner. There are so many good breeders out there that raise pits. They show conformation, agility, weight pulling which is so cool, obedience etc. Maybe people who sell or are considering a pit as a family member should be carefully screened to make sure that the breed is suitable for the family.

I love dogs but have become hesitant of pit bulls due to my experience with my neighbors - they did not mistreat the dogs, the dogs were great with the family, their kids, and my own, until one day the family was out and some women from the neighborhood were walking their dogs down the street. The pitbulls knocked down the fence and attacked the little ankle biter dogs - it was in my front yard and absolutely horrifying! The little dogs were defenseless and in trying to get away from the pits they wrapped the leashes around their owners. The women were screaming, knocked over, and bitten in the melee. Fortunately a man drove up to my neighbors who knew the dogs and was able to get them off - but then he blamed the women for the attack - which was wrong! I saw the whole thing. My kids never went back over, and the neighbors lied to Animal Control when they came to check on their dogs - they said they didn't have any dogs at all.

I have had dogs most of my life but really don't want to be around pits.

While I do get the difference between nature & nuture. I believe that a large number are indiscrimanetly bred, which leads to some of the agressive traits being predominate in a large number of this breed,,, Plus there is the additional problem of the large numbers which are often obtained for all the wrong reasons by inexperienced dog owners.... Unfortunately for the responsible owner of this breed all of them are being tarred with the same brush...

They are only aggressive as they are allowed/made to be. I've taken my girl to the dog park a number of times and the only problem we've ever had was with a german shepard. The shepard was really aggressive to other dogs, so much so that the owners tied it up to the fence to keep it from going after other dogs. Why that dog was there in the firs place Ill never know. Anyway, my dog went up to it once and ran off when it got lunged at. She went back over again and got bit on the ear. She didn't go after it but ran away and layed on her belly.

I've done rescue with this breed for years. I have only had one problem dog, and he was a mix. My rescues and personal dogs are great with my children(all 6) and do therapy, all pass the CGC test before going to new homes, and my vet LOVES working on my dogs. He says they are the easiest dogs to handle that he has ever dealt with. But, Pit Bulls should NOT be protective. Any kind of human aggression is frown on. That is the problem with the breed now. People are breeding for "protective" dogs, which means aggressive! When we fix the people problems, there will not be a problem with the breed!
