It assumes a silly little small god that picks favorites.

Well if you are a Jew then it means that you believe that you are chosen by your god and therefore somehow in an elevated position relative to all other people. This gives them the ablity to treat others with contempt and brutality, break international laws at their whim and drag the entire earth into a world war over their crappy strip of desert (which, by the way, their 'god' doesn't seem to be helping with very much), all without a conscience. To the rest of the world, the Jews as a chosen people means about as much as my Dad calling me the Chosen Son: who the f**k cares?

The chosen people means they were chosen by God for a special purpose and would eceive special blessings for following His will.
Initially it started with Abraham and the traceable lineage comes down through history.
It is the people God chose to take His message to the world. They -historically and Biblically - pretty mcuh kept it to themselves, and actually seemed to think they were a step above everyone else. (Sound familiar today)

Originally it is commonly (but wrongly)believed that if you were not a direct heir to one of the 12 tribes you could not be a Jew.

HOwever after Jesus' death on the cross and the Jews stoning of Philip... the gospel was taken to the gentiles... The people without the bloodline.

Now today the believers in Christ can lay claim to all the blessings and promises made to Abraham. See the following verses.

Gal 3: 14. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,16. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ ..17. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
18. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise......... 28. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29. AND IF YE BE CHRIST'S, THEN YE ARE ABRAHOM'S SEED, AND HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE PROMISE.

I would encourage you to read it in context for yourself.

So I guess the final answer to your question is

IF WE HAVE ACCEPTED CHRIST................WE ARE THE CHOSEN PEOPLE.

Isn't that good news?

In Christianity? It would be the descendants of the twelve tribes of Israel.
Ironically, the jews are the chosen ones.

In the Jehovah's Witness faith, I'm not sure the title they give them, but they believe there are a set number of 'chosen ones' as well. Unfortunatley it's hard to figure out just who qualifies for this.

The people chosen to go to Heaven.

Yes it originally meant Jews but Jesus came to bridge the gap between Jews and Gentiles. Now we too can be choosen and accepted in Abraham's family of promise.

Through Jesus we can be "adopted" in a sense by Abraham.
