Yes, it is. People who deride it have never experienced it truly. There are many counterfiets and sometimes people are faking but when the Holy Ghost comes upon you, you will begin to speak in another tongue. People try their best to explain it away and write it off as madness but it is a genuine experience spoken of in the Bible. In three instances int he Book of Acts where someone was recorded as receiving the Holy Ghost, the evidence was that they spoke in tongues. The Apostles did on the day of Pentecost and communicated the gospel to others of different nations. However, Acts ch.10 relating Cornelius's experience offers no such explanation. Neither does Pauls experienc in Acts ch. 19. There is a big difference between the Gift of Tongues as taught about in Corinthians, and speaking in tongues as the initial evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost. People will always look for an excuse to write something off because they are fearful and so indoctrinated they do not want to see the light. I have studied this for a very long time and the experience is real and it is amazing. I suggest you pray for it and let God answer your question for you. Study your Bible and pray and God will lead you to this awesome experience. Feel free to email me further if you would like to know more.

If you read the bible you will find that in new testament times speaking in tongues was speaking actual foreign languages so that others could hear the word of God. Today most Christians just babble and it is a real psychological problem and is not doctrinally correct either.

In 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, tongues of men refer to understandable human languages; the tongues of angels may refer to the medium by which angels communicate in heaven. Paul does not say that it is possible or desirable to speak with the tongues of angels, rather, he says that if such a thing were possible, it is not (nor is any other "gift") the mark of the Spirit of Christ -- genuine love is that mark (1 Cor. 13 describes Christian love).
Other than their native tongues. Each one began to speak in a language that he had not acquired and yet it was a real language and understood by those from various lands familiar with them. It was not jargon, but intelligible language.
Paul explains in 1Cor. 14:22 that "tongues" were a sign to
unbelievers and were not to be exercised unless one was present who understood them and could translate them. This restriction disposes at once of the modern so-called tongues which are nothing but jargon and hysteria.
Paul had the gift of tongues, but refused to exercise it except as it would be understood.
From what I understand, speaking in tongues stopped after the last apostle died. What is going on now is a bunch of hooey.
Former Pentecostalist Gerry Matatics recalled an experience he had as he started to suspect something amiss with the Pentecostal rallies he was attending. Having memorized the twenty-second Psalm in Hebrew, he exclaimed the equivalent of "The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want" during one of the "revivals," only to have it interpreted by the "translator" as a message from God instructing the audience to help build an extra wing on the local pastor's house!

No. In the bible, 'speaking in tongues' meant that everyone who heard you would hear you in their own language. For example, imagine a crowd of people from 10 different countries, speaking 10 different languages. If someone with the 'gift of tongues', Paul for example, stood up and addressed them, speaking in Greek, everyone would have thought he was speaking their language. Just like Douglas Adams' 'babblefish'.
Today, speaking in tongues means rolling around on the floor, babbling incoherently.
Both, of course, are absolute nonsense.

As I recall during the Pentecost, Acts 2:1, the apostles spoke actual languages that they themselves had never known.
Today some people make weird noises and call it speaking in tongues, but unless others can understand them, they're not even approaching what is described in the Bible.
If the Bible is accurate is a separate issue.

Glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, is really a mixture of a common psychological effect and lots of religious hype. If you put yourself into a certain state, you might start babbling. Or if you expect to babble and those around you expect you to babble, you also might babble. The brain is very cooperative in that respect. Then there are also those that babble because they wish to impress others about how holy they are.
I expect that this has been true of humans back then as much as now.

Most of the members get wrapped up in emotion and they start babbling syllables that have no meaning. They are told that they have been filled with the Holy Ghost. Some of them dance or start laughing, fainting, etc. as proof that God has filled them.
It's really nothing more than people getting carried away and acting strangely. Another way that the church will brain-wash the members and tell them that they are very close to God ... to keep them in the church and keep giving $$$.
Check out the attached site for more information. Very interesting!

I think speaking in tongues is just you speaking to God. Not everyone does it; not everyone is a figurative, as opposed to a literal, person.
It's not a public thing, I think. It's private. Also, if you do speak in tongues in public, an interpreter (another of God's talents) must be there; otherwise, you're just babbling. People who are just mumbling to get attention are babbling.

God never changes so neither would the Holy Spirit. You receive the gift of tongues through Him. I saw in the answers that it is not important in this day but that is not true. When you speak in the tongue of angels you speak mysteries unto God. God knows what's best for us and His spirit speaks the perfect prayer for our lives. When we don't know what to say the Holy Spirit does. I speak in tongues and assure you that it is a very effective form of prayer and it is presently being used by a vast number of Christians. (I can't speak for other religions.)
