I could fill books in answering your question as to why history is important.. We are repeating history as we speak as far as the Nazism and its uprise in the MidEast.. We learn from history...Another important reason is that history provides us with a frame of reference that enables us to recognise dangers to our society, both from within and externally, and it provides guidance as to how to deal with those dangers when they arise. I believe that it was the English philosopher Roger Scruton who said that denying children a solid grounding in the history of their country was calculated to produce a generation of gentle sheep that could be easily led by their political masters. I agree completely with that view. Shall I go on... and on.... and on....
Also... I forgot.. I am very very angry about our school system in the U.S. Here, we have given up history studies in favor of sex education or other such stupid subjects

history is important because if you forgot about what hap pend in the past then you wont know how to solve the problem if it returns in the future. The reason we remember history is so that we dont make the same mistakes that we made in the past, and if we do make the mistakes again then looking into the past will show us a solution to the problem. If you want to know a really useless subject then its English. You never learn anything in English that you didn't already know. I have yet to learn anything new in English since i was in 5th grade. So remember history, forget English. Besides being good at history is perfect for game shows, why do you think its always history teachers or professors that always win jeopardy.

because if you don't know anything about your past you are doomed to repeat it.
In other words, people make mistakes, but they learn from these mistakes and move forward. Then the next time they are in the same situation, they know which mistakes to avoid. Same thing with leaders and running the countries that they oversee. If they do not know their history, they might be caught with their pants down.

I find history to be the most interesting subject of all. How will we know if we are making any real progress as a species if we don't know what we have already done?

If we don't learn from the past we are doomed to repeat it. It's very important to study the past and learn from their mistakes/triumphs.

If you don't know where you've been you cant tell where you're going. Its important to learn about the past so we don't make the same mistakes, but also to learn about the good aspects and try to emulate them.

So we can learn from the mistakes of our predecessors. But you need to be careful and remember who wrote the history...there is sometimes political agendas involved.

so we dont repeat the mistakes of the past. otherwise, it defeats the purpose of all the tragedy that has occured if we didnt learn from it and become better.
