Fume -- which means smokey -- Blanc was first used in the USA by Robert Mondavi for an oaked Sauvignon Blanc. He was inspired by the 'blanc fume' name used in the Loire for a similar style wine.

Fume Blanc is now a recognised synonym for Sauvignon Blanc, so that is the grape variety that is being sipped

Sauvignon Blanc became a varietal with an alias in California, where it is now often known and labeled as "Fumé Blanc".(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque). Fumé Blanc is actually just a market name for dry Sauvignon Blanc.
